DEAN WINTERSTEEN: WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL
In a recent letter to college faculty and staff Dean Wendy Wintersteen ('78 PhD entomology) urges everyone to make this academic year an exceptional one for all students, founded on ISU's Principles of Community. “Recent headlines reflect the troubling and, unfortunately, persistent news of hate and fear in our country… I ask for your help in continuing our level of excellence with a firm, unbending commitment to overcome biases and hate and to eliminate incidents of bigotry, racism, disrespect and misunderstanding,” Wintersteen wrote. TURNING STUDENTS INTO SCIENTISTS
Rosemary Galdamez, a senior at North High School in Des Moines, was one of 19 interns with the George Washington Carver Summer Research Internship Program. The program allows undergrads and high school students to perform hands-on research. The program seeks to increase diversity within STEM and recruit the best and brightest students to Iowa State University. Galdamez worked with mentor Thomas Isenhart, professor of natural resource ecology and management, researching nitrate concentrations within the Bear Creek Watershed. More
EFFECTIVENESS OF SCN RESISTANT SOYBEANS WANES
Greg Tylka, Iowa State University nematologist, has found that soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistant soybean varieties are becoming less effective. The analysis indicates increasing damage from SCN to soybean resistant varieties. In some instances, resistant varieties allowed as much SCN feeding as susceptible varieties with no resistance. This trend will result in an increase of SCN, which means lower yields. More
AG BUSINESS CLUB TOPS IN NATION
The Iowa State University Agricultural Business Club earned the Outstanding Club Award from the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association at the organization’s annual meeting in Chicago in July. This award marks the 13th time in 15 years the Iowa State University club has received the Outstanding Club or Creative Club Award. More
SCOUTING FOR FUTURE AGRONOMISTS
Six Iowa teams participated in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Integrated Pest Management program’s seventh annual Crop Scouting Competition on July 31 at the Field Extension Education Laboratory. Student teams were scored on their knowledge of crop growth and development, insects, diseases, herbicide issues and weed identification. Extension specialists and agribusiness personnel, including many CALS alumni, scored teams and provided a learning experience at each in-field station. SIVESIND TO STEER STATEWIDE PEST RESISTANCE PLAN
A new staff member at Iowa State University will coordinate day-to-day activities of a statewide effort to help Iowa farmers address pest resistance in their fields. Evan Sivesind recently joined the Department of Entomology to manage the Iowa Pest Resistance Management Plan. The plan, developed through the efforts of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa State University and 11 partnering agricultural organizations, seeks to delay the development of resistance in insects, weeds and diseases and preserve management tools and profitability for farmers. SCHUMACHER, MOSHER HONORED BY AG,BIO ENGINEERS
Leon Schumacher (’87 PhD ag and life sciences education), professor and chair of the University of Missouri’s agricultural systems management program, was named Fellow by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers at its annual meeting, July 16-19, in Spokane. The award honors a member who is providing outstanding academic leadership while serving as a department chair. Gretchen Mosher (PhD ’11 industrial and ag tech), assistant professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State, received the Blue Ribbon Award for Grain Dust Explosion Suppression Education from the society.
DOYE NAMED FELLOW TO AG ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION
Damona Doye (’86 PhD economics), farm management specialist for Oklahoma State University (OSU) Cooperative Extension Service and Rainbolt Chair in Agricultural Finance with OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, was named Fellow by the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association.
BAAS, HANSEN HONORED BY ANIMAL SCIENCE SOCIETY
The American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and the Canadian Society of Animal Sciences held their joint annual meeting in Baltimore, July 8-12. Tom Baas (’72 animal science, ’89 MS, ’90 PhD), professor of animal science at Iowa State University was named fellow and Stephanie Hansen (’02 animal science), assistant professor of animal science at Iowa State University, earned the ASAS Early Career Achievement Award.
HOGBERG, FREESE, QUECK HONORED AT AG MEDIA SUMMIT
Iowa State University students and alumni were among the attendees at the Agriculture Media Summit July 22-26 in Snowbird, Utah. Several Cyclones gathered for a group photo as they celebrated alumni award winners. Betsy Freese ('84 ag journalism), executive editor for Living the Country Life and Successful Farming, received the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Honored Professional Award. Paul Queck ('70 animal science) was presented with the American Agricultural Editors' Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Queck worked as an editor with Farm Progress publications, in public relations and as a freelance writer and photographer. Maynard Hogberg (’66 ag and life sciences education, ’72 MS animal science, ’76 PhD), animal science professor emeritus and former department chair at Iowa State University, was honored by the Livestock Publications Council with its Headliner Award.
TAYLOR NAMED IOWA AGRI-SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Roland-Story agriculture instructor and FFA adviser Brad Taylor (’78 agricultural and life sciences education, ’00 MS professional ag) has been named the Iowa Agri-Science Teacher of the Year by the Board of Directors of the Iowa Association of Agriculture Educators. Taylor has become involved in STEM training and Curriculum for Agriculture Science Education, which has enabled him to become certified in Plant Science, Animal Sciences and Introduction to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. ALUMNI EARN IOWA CONSERVATION AWARDS
Several College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumni were honored at the recent Iowa Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners Annual Conference.
- Steve Brinkman (’90 ag studies) of Audubon received a regional conservation award.
- Tom Oswald (’81 farm operation, ’95 MS professional ag), a farmer near Cleghorn, received a regional conservation award.
- Dwight Dial (’72 ag and life sciences education, ’77 MS animal science), a farmer near Lake City, received a regional conservation award. He also was recently honored with a Calhoun County Farm Bureau Good Neighbor Award.
- Ann Brinkman (’89 ag business) of Audubon received a regional conservation award.
HOLST, BRASTER HONORED AT IOWA STATE FAIR
Kevin Holst (’89 ag studies), a farmer near Eldridge, was honored with the Way We Live Award, at the Iowa State Fair on August 11. Holst farms corn, soybeans, hay and cattle and has served three terms with the Farm Service Agency. He also sits on the board of directors for Samaritan Ministries. Marty Braster (’03 MS agronomy), environmental management specialist for the Rathbun Regional Water Association, was honored as “Iowan of the Day” by the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation on August 17. Braster was honored for his work in conservation and service to philanthropic organizations including the U.S. Peace Corps, Loess Scenic Byway and Chairiton Valley Switch Grass Project.
CARDINAL AND GOLD BLOOMS AT DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDENS EVENT
Iowa State University alumni and friends attended Iowa State Night at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens July 27. Sponsored by the Des Moines Botanical Gardens, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Iowa State University Alumni Association, the event included remarks from director of horticulture Kelly Norris (’08 horticulture, MS ’11) and CALS Dean Wendy Wintersteen. CALS alumni working at the gardens offered hands-on learning throughout the evening.
