COVER CROPS VALUABLE AS CATTLE FEED

Cover crops are known to protect soil and water quality, but they also can offer valuable livestock feed, according to Iowa State University research. Preliminary data on cattle performance suggests that weight gain is similar for stocker cattle grazed on cover-crops compared to cattle grazing on pasture. Iowa’s cattle industry accounts for an estimated $4 to $6 billion of economic activity in the state. More

 

CLIMATE CHANGE OUTPACES WILDLIFE ADAPTABILITY

Climate change is outpacing the ability of birds and other species to adapt to their changing environment. That’s the conclusion made by an international team of scientists that includes an Iowa State University biologist. The team’s recent paper in the academic journal Science Communications evaluated more than 10,000 published scientific studies. The analysis concludes that animals can respond to climate change, but those responses generally don’t allow species to cope with the rapid pace of rising temperatures. More

 

APEX EASES TRANSITION FOR MULTICULTURAL STUDENTS

The eight-week academic program is designed to assist incoming multicultural first-year students' transition into Iowa State. More

 

HABI-TALLY APP HELPS USERS HELP MONARCHS

HabiTally is a new, free mobile app that enables farmers, ranchers, landowners and private citizens to enter data about monarch habitat conservation efforts. The data will be anonymous and aggregated at the county level. Data will provide information on gains in milkweed across the U.S. and will be used to guide future conservation and protection decisions. The app was developed as a collaboration between Bayer and The Climate Corporation, with support from Iowa State University’s Center for Survey Statistics and Methodology. More

 

NETTLETON LEADS STATISTICS DEPARTMENT

Distinguished Professor of Statistics Daniel Nettleton, the Laurence H. Baker Chair in Biological Statistics, has been appointed chair of the Department of Statistics by Iowa State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Nettleton, a national leader in statistical genomics, began his five-year term as chair effective Aug. 16. He succeeds Max Morris, who will remain a professor in the department. More

 

LAMBERT EARNS NATIONAL TEACHING AWARD

The North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) awarded its 2019 Educator Award to Misty Lambert, associate professor in agricultural education and studies. She received the award at the 65th NACTA Conference on June 21 at the College of Southern Idaho. Lambert joined Iowa State University in 2017. She educates agriculture teachers, teaches graduate courses and serves as director of the Science with Practice program, which helps undergraduates gain research and work experience. More

 

RISING STAR INTERNS EXPERIENCE EXTENSION

Whether it’s sharing gardening experiences, helping with a county fair or sharing nutrition tips, the Iowa State University Rising Star Internship program helps students learn what it’s like to work in an extension office. Cheryl Heronemus, the extension director who helped develop the internships in 2014, says many college students are not familiar with the extension mission, and the program gives interns hands-on experience doing the type of work extension professionals enjoy every day. More

NEXT STOP ON CALS DEAN’S TOUR FOR

ALUMNI & FRIENDS: CLAY CO. FAIR SEPT 12

Daniel J. Robison, holder of the Endowed Dean’s Chair in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, will be joining Iowa State University president and former dean Wendy Wintersteen (’88 PhD entomology) and John Lawrence (’84 animal science, MS ’86 economics), vice president of extension and outreach, at the Clay County Fair on September 12.  They will offer an Agricultural Outlook Panel hosted by the Iowa Soybean Association at 10 a.m. followed by a lunch. CALS ALUMS EARN STANDING innOVATION AT

IOWA STATE FAIR

Eleven College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students and alumni joined more than 150 Iowa State University entrepreneurs to pitch their ideas to visitors at the university’s exhibit during the Iowa State Fair, Aug. 8-18. The theme of this year’s exhibit, “The Great Iowa State Pitch Off. STANDING InnOVATION!” is part of an ongoing university initiative to nurture a campus-wide culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Pitches took place during each day of the fair, and entrepreneurs advanced with votes from visitors to the exhibit. CALS students and alumni earned three of the 13 top awards:

  • Mitchell Hora (’17 ag systems technology, agronomy) and David Hora (freshman, agronomy), Continuum Ag, won Best of Show and a $5000 grant sponsored by the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business. David Hora is pictured above with Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen (’88 PhD entomology).
  • Daniel Bolin (’06 dairy science) and Lynn Bolin (’06 management), New Day Dairy, won the Community Entrepreneur Award and a $2500 grant sponsored by the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business.
  • Rebecca Lyons (’18 ag studies), Lunchsox, earned an Honorable Mention Award and a $1000 grant sponsored by the Iowa State Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship.

GOOD SHOWING BY CALS AT GOVERNOR’S CHARITY STEER SHOW

Daniel J. Robison, holder of the endowed dean’s chair in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, participated in the annual Iowa Governor's Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair Saturday, August 10. Robison partnered with exhibitor Quin McCollom, a Story County 4-H member from Colo, Iowa. Robison also presented McCollom a $1,000 scholarship to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for his outstanding work in the beef project area. This year's Governor's Charity Steer Show raised over $284,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Justine Hosch Stevenson ('10 animal science), founder of the Seeds of Hope Foundation, won the showmanship. More

Cody McKinley (’07 ag business) has been promoted to assistant vice president, state and national relations with the National Pork Producers Council.

 

Matt Priebe (’03 agronomy, plant health and protection), location manager for AgReliant in Marcus, was named to the Cherokee Area Economic Development Corporation. 

 

Brady Stewart (’02 ag systems technology) has been promoted to executive vice-president, U.S. hog production for Smithfield Foods.

 

Mike Bahnsen (’00 ag business) has been promoted to vice president of business development at Clear Lake Bank and Trust.

Joseph Balagtas (’98 MS economics), has been selected to serve as senior economist with the Council of Economic Advisers.

 

Tim Marek (’90 ag studies), farmer near Riverside, was featured by the Iowa Soybean Association.

Brad Marek (’88 animal science), farmer near Riverside, was featured by the Iowa Soybean Association.

 

Carolann Jensen (’86 public service and administration in ag, international ag), has been named the Iowa Board of Regents state relations officer for Iowa State University. 

 

Peter Ferket (’87 PhD animal science), extension poultry nutritionist, director of the Animal Food and Nutrition Consortium and associate head of the Prestage Family Department of Poultry Science at North Carolina State University, received the American Feed Industry Poultry Science Association Poultry Nutrition Award. 

 

Ron Rosati (’84 PhD ag and life sciences education) dean of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, retired on August 5.

 

Mike Kettwick (’83 ag and life sciences education), vice president of Farmers Bank and Trust in Buffalo Center, is retiring from the organization after 36 years of service.

 

Grant Gillard (’81 animal science), owner of Gillard Honey in Holden, Missouri, was featured in The Kansas City Star.

 

1970s

Wayne Humphreys (’74 animal science), farmer near Columbus Junction, was elected as a corn sector director to the U.S. Grains Council.
