NEW APIARY PROVIDES GOLDEN LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Bees have taken up residence in Cyclone-colored hives at the ISU Horticulture Research Station north of Ames. Soon they will provide learning opportunities for students, faculty and extension program participants. The first batch of honey is expected to be harvested later this fall. The sweet byproduct of learning may eventually be sold and supplied to dining centers on campus. More

FALL 2020: A SEMESTER LIKE NO OTHER

Faculty and staff have been planning for students’ return to campus for several months. Many classes are being offered with new safety protocols during the pandemic. In-person classes have reduced capacity to allow for physical distancing and require face coverings. Other classes are being offered online or as a hybrid option (partially in-person, partially online). DEALING WITH DAMAGE, STRESS FOLLOWING THE DERECHO

In response to the August 10 derecho that hit the Midwest, ISU Extension and Outreach is providing storm damage resources online, including scouting crop damage, disease and pest management on storm damaged crops, harvest considerations, cover crop options and assessing grain bin damage. In collaboration with COVID Recovery Iowa, ISU Extension and Outreach also is offering virtual programs designed to provide education about anxiety and offer practical tools to manage worry. More

REPTILIAN GENOME MAP YIELDS INSIGHT INTO ALL VERTEBRATES

ISU scientists contributed to a global effort to assemble the genome of the tuatara, a rare reptile species native to New Zealand. The study, recently published in the journal Nature, sheds light on the genomic structure of a huge range of species, including humans. More

RESEARCH REVEALS EFFECTS OF GLYPHOSATE IN MICE

Recently published studies lead by researchers in the Department of Animal Science showed exposure to glyphosate changed the level of some ovarian proteins in mice but did not impact ovarian steroid production, an indication the chemical used to kill weeds may not adversely affect reproduction. VIRTUAL FIELD DAYS BRING IOWA STATE RESEARCH TO YOU

A series of virtual tours beginning Aug. 31 will provide an update on research conducted at ISU Research and Demonstration Farms. Five virtual field day tour stops are scheduled for Aug. 31 through Sept. 4. Each tour be from 8-8:30 a.m. Tours will include in-field video, drone footage, presentations and Q&A sessions with extension specialists. Certified Crop Adviser credits are available. There is no charge to attend. Registration is required. More

CULTIVATING SCIENCE, FUTURE SCIENTISTS AT THE ISU HORT FARM

The ISU Horticulture Research Station continues its tradition of cultivating graduate student science, even in the midst of a pandemic. Graduate students conduct on-farm research and learn about the day-to-day management of horticulture enterprises. They also bring added experience that helps keep things running smoothly at the research farm and provide valuable leadership to undergraduate student workers. More

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO GOVERNOR'S CHARITY STEER SHOW EXHIBITORS

The ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Department of Animal Science partnered with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council to host the annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the university’s Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center on Aug. 15. The show and auction typically take place during the Iowa State Fair, which was canceled in response to COVID-19. Proceeds from the auction topped more than $255,000 to benefit Iowa Ronald McDonald Houses. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offered a $500 scholarship to each of the 23 exhibitors. More

STUDENTS MAKE SWEET DONATION, TAKE MILK-A-COW ONLINE

Students in the Dairy Science Club at Iowa State have taken their popular Iowa State Fair – I-Milked-a-Cow exhibit – virtual. Club members and advisers created an educational video showing how milk flows from cow to table safely and effectively. The Dairy Science Club also recently donated 2,200 cups of their homemade ice cream to three local organizations – the ISU Food Pantry, Salvation Army of Ames and Food at First of Ames. When the 2020 spring semester was moved to an online format due to COVID-19, the club had to discontinue their weekly ice cream sales to students and faculty on campus. More

CALS alumni and faculty members were among those recently honored during the American Society of Animal Science’s virtual annual meeting. More

  • Gary Bennett (’73 animal science), beef cattle geneticist for the USDA Meat Animal Research Center in Clay, Nebraska, Fellow Award
  • Kenneth Stalder (’85 farm operation, ’87 animal science, ’95 PhD), professor in the ISU Department of Animal Science, Rockefeller Prentice Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics
  • Elizabeth Messersmith (’18 MS animal science), graduate student in the ISU Department of Animal Science, Wilson G. Pond International Travel Award
  • James Reecy, ISU associate vice president for research and professor in the ISU Department of Animal Science, Bouffault International Animal Agriculture Award

JACKSON HONORED FOR CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Mark Jackson, farmer near Rose Hill, was selected as the 2020 Iowa Conservation Farmer of the Year. Jackson (’74 farm operation) uses a variety of practices to improve soil health and water quality: no-till, contouring, terraces, cover crops and planting waterways and grass buffers. The award is sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. More

KIMLE RECEIVES TED BAIR MENTORSHIP AWARD

Kevin Kimle (’91 MS economics), director of the ISU Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative, received the Ted Bair CYstarters Mentorship Award. The ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship presented the new award to Kimle on July 31. The award honors Ted Bair, a former Iowa Small Business Development Center employee, who unexpectedly passed away in February. More

BENNING NAMED EXTENSION AND OUTREACH ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Jamie Benning has been named the new assistant director for ISU Extension and Outreach - Agriculture and Natural Resources. Benning (’01 agronomy, ’03 MS soil science) previously served as the ISU Extension and Outreach water quality program manager, where she worked with Iowa State faculty, staff and partners on water related research and programming. More

BOLIN, NEW DAY DAIRY GUEST BARN EARN RENEW RURAL IOWA ENTREPRENEUR AWARD

Dan Bolin (’06 dairy science), farmer near Clarksville, Iowa, and co-founder of New Day Dairy, LLC, won the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s Renew Rural Iowa Entrepreneur Award for the New Day Dairy Guest Barn. Dan and his wife, Lynn, built their two-story bed and breakfast on the family’s 130-year-old farm. The guest barn features three en suite bedrooms and an overlook into the Bolins’ dairy parlor. More

Several college alumni have been recognized with a Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award. The award recognizes families who take pride in being good neighbors and stewards of the land. It is presented by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in partnership with the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers.

Young Alum of the Month

Jacob Button (’11 horticulture), from Conrad, Iowa, is pursuing his dream of managing both people and turf. Button serves as the golf course superintendent at Olivia Golf Club in Olivia, Minnesota. In his previous role he served as part of the grounds crew for U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. His role includes conducting daily crew meetings and testing the moisture of the course to determine if the greens need water. More
