CELEBRATE WITH CALS AT HILTON FEB. 8
You're invited to join the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the Cyclone women's basketball game vs. Oklahoma on Feb. 8. The college will be featured throughout the game, including an on-court presentation of the 2020 CALS Emerging Iowa Leader Award to Jacob Handsaker (’04 ag studies), story county farmer and co-owner of Hands-On Excavating. IOWA FARMLAND VALUE UP 2.3%
Favorable interest rates, strong yields and limited land supply combined to help drive Iowa’s farmland values up for the second time in six years. The statewide value of an acre of farmland is now estimated to be $7,432, which represents an increase of 2.3 percent, or $168, since 2018. More
PREP FOR 2020 CROP YEAR WITH CROP ADVANTAGE
2020 Crop Advantage meetings will give producers a solid foundation of current research-based crop production information to help make informed decisions for their farming operation. The meetings are an opportunity for farmers and crop advisers to hear current research and crop production information from Iowa State University. Extension specialists will travel to 14 locations around Iowa from Jan. 3-30, providing management options and recommendations on current and future crop production issues. More
RESEARCHERS EARN NATIONAL SCIENCE AND INNOVATION HONORS
Three scientists in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have recently received notable national recognition for research and innovation. CALS faculty named as new fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science are William Beavis (’85 MS agronomy), professor and the G.F. Sprague Chair in Agronomy (center), and Susan Lamont, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished professor in Agriculture and Life Sciences in the Department of Animal Science. SCHALINSKE RECEIVES USDA TEACHING AWARD
Kevin Schalinske, an Iowa State University food science and human nutrition professor, was named one of five 2019 regional winners of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching Awards. The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities presented the award in November. More
GLOBAL FOOD CHALLENGE EMERGING LEADERS
Two CALS students are among six students selected as national Global Food Challenge Emerging Leaders by Land O’Lakes, Inc. Brooke Beinhart (left), junior in agricultural business and agronomy, and Rachel Grober (right), junior in agricultural business, economics and supply chain management, were selected from the highly competitive pool of 16 sophomore finalists from six universities. Their experiential learning opportunity and 12-week internship will start at Land O’Lakes, Inc. headquarters in May 2020. More
STUDENTS HONOR RUBLE, SCHULTZ WITH MILLEMAN MENTORSHIP AWARD
The CALS Student Council presented the Milleman Family Mentorship Award to Marshall Ruble (’78 animal science), agriculture research station superintendent, and Dick Schultz (’65 forestry, ’68 MS, ’70 PhD), University Professor in natural resource ecology and management, for their dedication to mentoring students. The award is sponsored by Jane and Leo Milleman from Ames, Iowa. Leo, who is a 1969 graduate from Iowa State, benefited from advice he received as a student from an adviser in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Honorees were nominated and selected by students. More
FUNDISU: GROWING EDUCATION IN UGANDA THROUGH SCHOOL LUNCHES
A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support the work of Iowa State University’s Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods to end hunger and improve children’s education in Uganda's Kamuli District. By making a gift online you will contribute to the center’s school garden and lunch programs. Support raised will provide learning opportunities and nutritious meals to almost 3,000 children on each school day. The campaign runs through Jan. 3. More

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF FARM MANAGERS, RURAL APPRAISERS HONORS CALS GRADS
Several College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumni were recently honored by the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers for professional excellence. Lawain Biermann (’91 ag studies), farm manager with Hertz Farm Management in Cedar Falls, Iowa, was named the 2019 Professional Farm Manager of the Year. Biermann (above) received the award due to his industry knowledge, strong attention to detail and noticeable passion for his job. Video
Rex Wilcox (’72 ag business), retired president of Stalcup Ag Service, received the 2019 D. Howard Doane Award for outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture with emphasis on farm management and rural appraisal. James Borel (’78 ag business), former executive vice president at DuPont Pioneer, received the 2019 Carl F. Hertz Distinguished Service Award. Ben Isaacson (’06 animal science, ’09 MS), co-owner of Agri-Management Services, received the 2019 Early Career Award. Chip Flory (’87 ag journalism), editor emeritus of Pro Farmer, Farm Journal Economist and host of AgriTalk, received the 2019 Meritorious Service in Communication Award. More
FARRELL EARNS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FROM AG RETAILERS
Ron Farrell (’66 agronomy), president of Farrell Growth Group, received the 2019 Jack Eberspacher Lifetime Achievement Award from the Agricultural Retailers Association at the organization’s annual meeting in December. Farrell was honored for steadfast contributions to the association, fundamentally advancing ag retail and sharing his expertise. More
CONGRATS TO CALS NEWEST ALUMNI
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will welcome its 320 newest alumni during convocation Friday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Doors open at 9 a.m. Macy Marek, agriculture and life sciences education, is the convocation speaker. Kayla Kaalberg, global resource systems, will be the CALS student marshal at the university undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Kaalberg will be accompanied by her faculty mentor, Carmen Bain, sociology. CALS Student Council will present awards to the following graduates: Scarlett Eagle, genetics, for outstanding senior; Marek, for leadership excellence; Kaalberg, for academic achievement; Jesse Matt, forestry and global resource systems, for distinguished service; Garrett Onstot, animal science and global resource systems, for outstanding ambassador of agriculture and life sciences; and Natili Jouzi, nutrition and dietetics, for commitment to diversity.

The grassroots organization led by Jim Christensen ('80 farm operation), met with more than 150 alumni and friends, students, farmers and legislators in support of Iowa State University's legislative priorities.
