INNOVATING TO BRING THE WORLD TO THE CLASSROOM |
Lee Burras (’81 agronomy, ’84 MS soil science), Morrill Professor in the Department of Agronomy, has been taking Iowa State students to countries around the world since 2002. While on these study abroad trips, students experience other cultures and see first-hand how agricultural practices differ from those in the United States. When the COVID-19 pandemic put a temporary halt to all of Iowa State’s study abroad trips, Burras found an innovative way to offer international experiences to students. More |

ENSURING SAFETY WHILE EXPLORING MICROBIOLOGY |
Claudia Lemper-Manahl, assistant teaching professor in plant pathology and microbiology, has taken a number of precautions to safeguard her students and staff in her in-person medical microbiology lab. Her efforts prevent not only the spread of COVID-19, but also the spread of pathogens being studied in the lab. Students who take this course learn how microbiology plays a role in human health, agriculture and veterinary medicine. Video |

CARVER HONORED BY INSTITUTE OF FOOD TECHNOLOGISTS |
George Washington Carver, Iowa State’s first African American student and faculty member, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Institute of Food Technologists Include Award. Cathie Woteki, professor in food Science and human nutrition and former dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was a part of the special presentation. This video honors Carver's life and legacy in celebration of this award. |

NEW MINOR ADDRESSES GLOBAL HEALTH |

WANG, NIKOLAU NAMED AAAS FELLOWS |
The American Association for the Advancement of Science has named Kan Wang (left) and Basil Nikolau to its class of 2020 AAAS Fellows. Wang is the Global Professor in Biotechnology in agronomy and co-director of the Crop Bioengineering Center. Nikolau is the Frances M. Craig Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology, director of the Center for Metabolic Biology and director of the W.M. Keck Metabolomics Research Laboratory. HAMILTON POULTRY TEACHING, RESEARCH FACILITY RECEIVES NEW GIFTS |
The ISU Department of Animal Science has received several gifts to operationalize the pedigree room in the Robert T. Hamilton Poultry Teaching and Research Facility. Feinhage Poultry-Solutions contributed the pedigree room pens, and several farm groups within Versova, including Hawkeye Pride Farms, CenterFresh Farms and Iowa Cage-Free, donated funds for penning installation. When tallied together, these contributions provided a savings of $100,000 to the facility. In addition, Chore-Time donated hopper bottom bins that will provide feed to the pedigree room, with Goodman Classic donating the installation. More |

Paul Ackley ('67 farm operations) and his late wife, Nancy, were honored with the Practical Farmers of Iowa 2021 Sustainable Agriculture Achievement Award. Ackley operates a diversified crop and livestock farm near Bedford, Iowa, raising hair sheep, cattle, corn, soybeans, hay, winter wheat and a diverse mix of cover crops. The operation has a history of incorporating conservation practices like no-till, rotational grazing, terraces, wetlands, grass waterways and riparian buffers. More |
