RECORD HIGHS PREDICTED FOR 2019 LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
An Iowa State University livestock economist expects record U.S. production for beef, pork and poultry in his forecast for 2019. Demand for U.S. poultry and livestock remains strong at the start of 2019, but trade tensions could spark uncertainty for producers in the coming months, said Lee Schulz, associate professor of economics and livestock markets specialist. FARMERS ACTIVE IN WATERSHED GROUPS MORE LIKELY TO PLANT COVER CROPS
Research by Iowa State University shows that active farmer involvement in watershed management groups and other conservation networks is key to adopting conservation practices like cover crops. The study, based on surveys conducted in three Iowa watersheds – the Iowa, Missouri-Little Sioux, and Upper Mississippi-Maquoketa – measured Iowa farmers’ awareness, attitudes and actions in support of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy’s water quality improvement objectives. MARTIN HONORED WITH GOLDEN OWL AWARD
Robert Martin, agricultural education and studies professor, was presented one of seven Iowa Nationwide Golden Owl Awards on Jan. 15. The honor recognizes his contributions in preparing students for successful careers in agriculture. Nationwide established the Golden Owl Award to honor contributions of agriculture teachers and the importance of agricultural education for future industry leaders. The awards are the result of a partnership between Nationwide and the Iowa FFA Foundation. The Iowa honoree will be selected in April. Amali Stephens (second from left), senior in biology, placed first in the poster competition. Theresa Brehm (second from right), senior in global resource systems, placed first in the oral presentation competition. Valeria Cano Camacho (left), senior in agronomy, and Megan Kemp, senior in agronomy, also participated in the competitions. CALS GRADS TOP FARM BUREAU’S AG INNOVATION CHALLENGE
Steven Brockshus ('17 ag and life sciences education), pictured, won the 2019 American Farm Bureau Federation's Ag Innovation Challenge. His business FarmlandFinder aims to make the world's farmland-availability information accessible to its users. The Ag Innovation Challenge provides opportunities for individuals to showcase business innovations being developed in rural regions of the U.S. Continuum Ag, founded by Mitchell Hora ('17 agronomy, ag systems technology), was a semi-finalist for the challenge. Both Brockshus and Hora participated in the Iowa State Ag Entrepreneurship Initiative (AgEI) during their time at Iowa State. CALS alumni and participants of AgEI programs have won the national challenge three out of its five years. More
HEMMES NAMED TRAILBLAZER BY EXECUTIVE WOMEN IN AG
April Hemmes (’82 animal science), a row-crop farmer from Hampton, Iowa, was recognized as the first-ever Executive Women in Agriculture Trailblazer Award winner at Top Producer’s 2019 Executive Women in Agriculture conference in Chicago. The award is presented to a female producer who is a shining example for her peers, advocate for agriculture and represents an innovative farming operation. More
NIELSEN, BLAYLOCK HONORED BY SOIL SCIENCE SOCIETY OF AMERICA
The Soil Science Society of America honored David Nielsen ('77 meteorology, MS '79 agronomy) and Alan Blaylock (’89 PhD agronomy) at its annual international meeting in San Diego Jan. 6-9. Nielsen was named the 2018 recipient of the Soil Science Applied Research Award. Nielsen retired in July after 34 years as a research agronomist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service Central Plains Research Management Unit. Blaylock, a senior agronomist at Nutrien specializing in soil fertility and plant nutrition, received the Soil Science Industry and Professional Award. More
SCHWAB, PETERSONS, KENNEDYS EARN IOWA BEEF QUALITY ASSURANCE AWARDS
Denise Schwab (’83 animal science, ’87 MS professional ag), ISU Extension and Outreach beef specialist, was honored with the 2018 Iowa Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Educator Award from the Iowa Beef Industry Council. Peterson Farms, owned and operated by Curt and Kaylene Peterson of Eddyville, Iowa, along with their children, Makenzie, Abby and Kylie Peterson (’17 ag and life sciences education), received the 2018 Iowa BQA Cow-Calf Award. Kennedy Cattle Company of Atlantic, Iowa, is the 2018 Iowa BQA Feedyard Award recipient, and is owned and managed by Zak and Emily Kennedy and Mitch Kennedy (’05 ag studies). More
SMITH HONORED FOR SUSTAINABLE AG BY PFI
Margaret Smith (’77 agronomy, ’80 MS) and Doug Alert, of Hampton, Iowa, received the 2019 Sustainable Agriculture Achievement Award from Practical Farmers of Iowa on Jan. 18. The award honors an individual or couple that has shown exemplary commitment to sustainable agriculture, generously shared their knowledge with others and been influential in efforts to foster vibrant communities, diverse farms and healthy food. Smith, a forage agronomist for Albert Lea Seed, and Alert operate Ash Grove Farm, a diversified, certified organic crop and livestock operation. More
FRIEST, ULCH, DEJONG HONORED BY IOWA SOYBEAN
Three College of Agriculture and Life Sciences graduates were recently honored by the Iowa Soybean Association. Denny Friest (‘68 animal science), a farmer near Radcliffe, received the Innovator in Production Research Award. Ed Ulch (’68 ag business), a farmer near Solon, received the Legacy of Leadership Award. And, Joel DeJong (’80 ag business, ’88 MS professional ag), ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist, received the 2018 Friend of the Iowa Soybean Farmer Award.
