Growing up on a diversified crop and livestock farm in Larwill, Indiana, Dillon Sheiss, junior in animal science, cultivated his passion for livestock judging. The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering is a hub for student organizations known for creating a student experience that builds community, networks and knowledge. The Power Pullers Club cultivates those ideals and more. Every year, the team competes in the American Society of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers International quarter-scale tractor student design competition and spends most of the year designing and building their very own quarter-scale tractors for the competition. STUDENTS CONCEPTUALIZE BENEFITS FOR THE EGG INDUSTRY

Last semester, agricultural and biosystems engineering seniors Julia Bowman, Camren Saxton, Thomas Sell and Sam Te Slaa decided to go a different route with their capstone project. Rather than selecting from project ideas submitted by companies, the team of students decided to expand upon previous research on laying hen housing conducted by Richard Gates, Egg Industry Center, and take it one step further to work on a heated perch system. RESEARCHERS HELP LEAD MULTISTATE PROJECT FOR A MORE DIVERSE CORN BELT

In Iowa, more than 24 million acres are devoted to crops. That represents about 68% of the state’s land area - and more than 94% of that land is used to produce corn and soybeans. Iowa State researchers are part of a $10 million Diverse Corn Belt Project to explore the potential to increase diversification of crops and livestock on Midwest farms. More

DISCOVERY OF METABOLIC SWITCH COULD LEAD TO TARGETING TREATMENT OF OBESITY, CANCER

Hua Bai, genetics, development and cell biology, and his research team have discovered a method for modifying the function of an enzyme crucial to fat production in fruit flies, which could lead to more effective treatments of cancer and childhood obesity in humans. More

FROM FOREST TO FARM - USING WOODCHIPS FOR WATER QUALITY

Researchers are studying the process behind weeding out certain species of trees in forests to help other trees grow, and using those weeded-out trees to improve water quality. “It’s like weeding your garden,” said Billy Beck ('18 PhD environmental science), natural resource ecology and management. “But instead of throwing the weeds into the yard, you are chopping them up and using them to clean water.” More

CropsTV RETURNS FOR SEASON THREE OF ON-DEMAND EDUCATION

CropsTV, by ISU Extension and Outreach, returns for a third season in 2023. This educational program delivers crop production education at home, in the office or anywhere there is an internet connection. The Season Three program features 33 episodes covering a variety of crop management, pest management, nutrient management, and soil and water management topics. More

HENDERSON TO LEAD ISU EXTENSION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Jason Henderson has been appointed vice president of Iowa State University’s Extension and Outreach programs. Henderson, who currently serves as director of extension and senior associate dean for faculty development in the Purdue University College of Agriculture, as well as assistant vice provost for engagement, will join Iowa State on April 3. He succeeds John Lawrence, who plans to retire this spring. More

ALUMNI NAMED MASTER PORK PRODUCERS, PARTNER

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumni Ben Bader and Mark Schleisman, pictured side by side

Three CALS alumni were honored at the recent 2023 Iowa Pork Congress held in Des Moines. Ben Bader ('08 ag systems technology) and Mark Schleisman ('86 ag business) were honored as two of Iowa's Master Pork Producers for 2022. Jim McMillan ('87 animal science, '93 DVM) was named one of the 2022 Master Pork Partners. More

LAWRENCE INDUCTED INTO CATTLEMEN'S HALL OF FAME

John Lawrence ('84 animal science, '86 MS economics) received the 2022 Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame Award at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit in December. He was nominated for this honor by a group of producers and allied leaders for his service and engagement through many Iowa beef industry evolutions throughout his career. More

Young alum of the month Matthew Hart

As a layout design engineer at TRUMPF, Matthew Hart ('19 industrial technology) uses computer-aided design software to create special layouts of machines so customers can visualize their machines and see what the inside of them look like. He appreciates that each project is unique and challenges him to think creatively in order to meet customers' requirements. More
