JOIN US AT THE ANNUAL CALS BBQ AUG. 31

Make plans to attend the college’s annual BBQ on Aug. 31, 7-10 a.m. at the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center, prior to the Iowa State vs. UNI football game! Visit with fellow alums, students, faculty and friends and enjoy remarks at 8:30 a.m. by Daniel J. Robison, holder of the Endowed Dean's Chair in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Bring your family for hands-on activities with CALS student organizations, balloon animals, a hot breakfast and more! Registration requested by Aug. 23. A freewill donation (suggested $5 per person) to help defray meal costs will be accepted at the door. CY-HAWK PARTNERSHIP ADVANCES IOWA BIOSCIENCES

Researchers from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa are building joint teams to collect data, grow projects and compete for bigger grants. This year’s grant program invited proposals to grow the state’s bioscience economy: vaccines and immunotherapy; precision and digital agriculture; medical devices; and biobased chemicals. Researchers will use gut bacteria to treat chronic diseases, improve weather forecasts for precision agriculture and produce better vaccines against swine and avian flu. More

 

NEW FINDINGS OFFER INSIGHTS INTO MOSQUITO’S MALARIA IMMUNITY

A new study by Iowa State University researchers describes how mosquitoes fight off parasites that cause malaria, a disease that sickens millions of people every year. The study, published recently in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows how the mosquito immune system combats malaria parasites at multiple stages of development. A better understanding of the mosquito immune response could lay the groundwork for future research to combat the transmission of malaria. More

 

IN FOCUS: INTERNS WORK TO PROTECT IOWA'S WATER, BEAUTIFY THE LANDSCAPE

Several College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students are working as interns this summer gaining hands-on experience, networking with industry professionals and building their resumes. COLLABORATION LEADS TO GREENER FIELDS ACROSS AG

Iowa State University researchers hope to connect the "silos" of various disciplines by encouraging wide collaboration to address agricultural challenges. The effort is part of the Genomes to Fields Initiative, which began in 2014 to make genomic data related to corn as widely available as possible. More

 

FARM FRESH PRODUCE FOCUS OF AUG 5 FIELD DAY

The fruit and vegetable research taking place at Iowa State University’s Horticulture Research Station will be on full display for the Fruit and Vegetable Field Day Aug. 5 from 2-6:30 p.m. The annual event will feature various research and demonstration projects tailored toward commercial growers, extension personnel, nonprofit organizations and Master Gardeners. The field day is being organized in partnership with the Practical Farmers of Iowa, the Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Registration is free, but required. More

IOWA ASSOCIATION OF AG EDUCATORS HONORS CALS GRADS

The Iowa Association of Agricultural Educators recently honored several College of Agriculture and Life Sciences graduates for professional excellence. Craig McEnany (’79 ag and life sciences education), pictured, was honored with the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. McEnany served as a leader for the agricultural education department at Des Moines Area Community College for 30 years and now works as a program assistant for CALS Student Services at Iowa State University. Alan Spencer (’95 ag and life sciences education, ’08 MS), ag educator at Red Oak Community Schools, received the Outstanding Teacher Award, and Scott Johnson (’02 ag and life sciences education), executive secretary and treasurer for the Iowa FFA Association, received the Outstanding Service Citation. Sarah DeBour (’09 ag and life sciences education), ag educator at Hampton-Dumont-CAL Community Schools, was honored with the Teacher Mentor Award, and Ashley Wiebe (’12 ag and life sciences education, ’18 MS), ag educator at Muscatine Community Schools, received the Outstanding Early Career Teacher Award. Kevin Anderson (’15 ag and life sciences education), animal science and horticulture instructor for Des Moines Public Schools, received the Teachers Turn the Key Professional Development Scholarship. Adam Bierbaum (’12 agronomy), farmer near Griswold, was elected as District 7 director for the Iowa Corn Growers Association board of directors.

 

Cassie Jones (’12 PhD nutritional science), associate professor in Kansas State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, received the 2019 American Society of Animal Science Early Career Achievement Award.

 

Darrin Rahn (’12 ag business) has accepted a new position as an associate marketing manager at PepsiCo.

 

Nathan Anderson (’10 agronomy), farmer near Aurelia, testified at the House Agriculture Conservation and Forestry Subcommittee Hearing on behalf of Practical Farmers of Iowa.

Adriana Murillo-Williams (’05 MS plant pathology, ’07 PhD crop production and physiology), has accepted a position as the agronomy extension educator with Pennsylvania State Extension for Clinton, Centre, Mifflin and Juniata counties.

Julie Graesch (’05 biology, ’13 MS professional ag) has been named biological program manager for BioWorks.

 

Martha Smith (’04 ag business, international ag), global issues management lead for new platforms at Bayer Crop Science, has been elected to serve on the ISU Alumni Association board of directors.

 

Kelli Cameron (’02 ag and life sciences education), director of physician recruitment and retention for Mercyhealth serving Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, has been elected to serve on the ISU Alumni Association board of directors.

 

Min Du (’01 PhD animal science, food science and human nutrition), professor and Endowed Chair in Growth Biology with Washington State University’s Department of Animal Sciences, received the Animal Physiology and Endocrinology Award from the American Society of Animal Science.

 

1980s

Robert Regenwether ('89 ag business), farm manager and real estate agent with Farmers National Company, received the company's 25-year employment award.

 

Rod Pierce (’85 farm operation), farmer near Woodward, was elected as the District 5 representative on the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.

 

Chris Edgington (’84 animal science), farmer near St. Ansgar, was elected to the National Corn Growers Association board of directors.

 

John Marcy (’84 MS food technology, ’87 PhD) extension specialist and University of Arkansas professor at the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science, was named the 2019 Industry Leader of the Year by the multi-state trade organization, The Poultry Federation (TPF) — Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

 

Jerry Wright (’81 farm operation), farmer near Eagle Grove, was elected as the District 2 representative on the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.

 

1970s

Roy Budlong ('79 animal science) has retired as president and CEO of PremierBank and has assumed the role of chairman of the board and investment officer for the organization.

 

Richard Paris (’78 forest management) has retired after a 35-year career with the U.S. federal government. His most recent role was serving as electrical manager for the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington.
