HOW TO MAKE SWEET CORN EVEN BETTER

It’s hard to beat fresh sweet corn in the summer. Or is it? Two Iowa State faculty are part of a major federal research project aimed at boosting sweet corn quality, using the same innovative genetic tools that have led to advancements in field corn. More

SWEET OPPORTUNITY FOR HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Student employees of the ISU Creamery, many of whom are interested in dairy science or product development careers, gain hands-on experience learning to make ice cream and cheese inside the Food Sciences Building. They learn about pasteurization and how to manage finances and inventory, among other things. They also get to taste the fruits of their labor. More

Crislene Vieira Dos Santos, a doctoral student at the Federal University of Vicosa in Brazil, is partaking in a visiting scholar program under the guidance of Asheesh Singh, professor of agronomy. Stepping into the director role, Laura Greiner ('96 animal science, '99 MS, '01 PhD animal nutrition) is ready to guide the Iowa Pork Industry Center in its efforts to maintain the state’s standing as a leader in advancing animal agriculture. Greiner succeeds Dr. Chris Rademacher, who has spent the past year as interim director. More

CYCLONE FOOTBALL A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR THE PETERSENS

When Zach Petersen (’22 agricultural systems technology) played football for the Cyclones, he was able to help his younger brother, Joey, junior in industrial technology, when he also became a defensive end for the team. Joey is now offering the same assistance to the third Petersen brother, AJ, freshman in agricultural systems technology, who will play tight end. All three boys learned from their father, Troy Petersen, a defensive lineman for the Cyclones in the early ‘90s. More

MARTIN HONORED FOR IMPACTS ON INDIANA AGRICULTURE

Marshall Martin

Marshall Martin ('66 ag business) was named Indiana's Honorary Master Farmer recipient, an award presented by Indiana Prairie Farmer and the Purdue College of Agriculture. The award is in recognition of Martin's involvement behind the scenes in many important projects related to Purdue agriculture. During his more than 45-year career at Purdue, he served in various teaching, research and Extension roles, and took on several administrative positions. More

Young Alum of the Month

With the spin of a wheel, Maddy McGarry ('20 agricultural and life sciences education, international agriculture) became the 2023 U.S. Cherry Blossom Queen. As part of her royal duties, McGarry traveled to Japan, where she met with various Japanese officials and toured several places, including the place where the first cherry blossom tree was grown before being gifted by Japan to the U.S. more than a century ago. More
