SERVICE LEARNING IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS |
Three CALS undergraduate students spent the spring semester on the island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, participating in the EARTH Program. The program provides Iowa State students with many hands-on and service-learning opportunities. They can either spend a summer on the island or take part in a semester-long experience working, living and helping in the community. More |

INCREASING FOOD SAFETY VIA POULTRY GUT HEALTH |
Around 48 million people in the U.S. get sick each year from foodborne pathogens, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Melha Mellata, associate professor of molecular microbiology, is on a mission to develop new treatments and procedures to improve poultry health and mitigate bacterial infections, such as salmonella, in poultry and humans. The first flock of turkeys raised at Iowa State's Stanley L. Balloun Turkey Teaching and Research Facility was recently sent to West Liberty Foods for processing. This fall, students, faculty and staff will get to enjoy the resulting oven roasted turkey breast at ISU Dining locations. More |

Colin Hurd ('13 agricultural studies) works with autonomous technology, which has the capacity to allow farmers to spend less time in the cab and more time focusing on other tasks. As CEO of Mach Inc., a company that creates autonomous solutions for heavy equipment, Hurd and his team provide technical solutions in perception, navigation, route planning, monitoring and connectivity to sync up their companies’ existing autonomous technology with tasks that clients demand.
