CALS WELCOMES NEW ALUMNI IN RECORD NUMBERS
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences welcomed 780 new alumni on May 7. More than 500 participated in CALS convocation prior to the Iowa State University commencement ceremony. Matthew Welter (’16 agricultural biochemistry), shown here with CALS Associate Dean David Acker, served as the college’s student marshal. Graduates honored by the Iowa State CALS Council include: Alissa Campbell (’16 microbiology), Hannah Darr (’16 global resource systems) Alexandra Ferguson (’16 agronomy), Matt Kerns (’16 animal science) and Drew Mogler (‘16 agricultural business). GOV. BRANSTAD TOURS RESEARCH SITES, EMPHASIZES PARTNERSHIP FOR CONSERVATION SUCCESS
Governor Terry Branstad signed a proclamation to celebrate Iowa’s Soil and Water Conservation Week on April 25. He toured cover crop and bioreactor test sites at the ISU Ag Engineering/Agronomy Research Farm, and the Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Station provided a demonstration. More  
 
NEW WEBSITE FOR REGIONAL CORN NITROGEN RATE CALCULATOR
The regional Corn Nitrogen Rate Calculator website, which has been helping farmers determine profitable nitrogen rates since 2005, has a new URL, a revised nitrogen response trial database and is easier to use on mobile devices. More 
 
CALS GRADUATE: FARMING’S NOT JUST A JOB
More than eight percent of CALS graduates returned to family farming operations in 2015. New grad Joel Watson (’16 ag studies) shares how he decided to continue working on the family farm near Ventura, Iowa, in this video he created for an agricultural communications class. More  
 
STUDENTS WIN OVERALL PRIZE AT JUDGING CONFERENCE
Iowa State University student teams won the overall sweepstakes award among four-year institutions at the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Judging Conference in April. The ISU Ag Knowledge Bowl team won first place for the sixth year in a row. Teams ranked first in agribusiness, ag computers, ag sales, crop and horticulture. The soil judging team ranked fifth. More 
 
ISU NAMED TREE CAMPUS USA BY ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION
Iowa State University recently earned the designation of ‎Tree Campus USA‬ from the Arbor Day Foundation. To mark the achievement faculty, staff and students planted over 75 shrubs and trees and over 300 perennials in a new installation dubbed “Witchhazel Walk” on Arbor Day April 19. More
 
BECOME A BUG BUDDY – HELP FUND ISU INSECT ZOO
The ISU Insect Zoo will hold its second annual Bug Village on Aug. 27 in the Molecular Biology building atrium. To keep the event free and open to the public, students involved with the Insect Zoo have launched a FundISU project. More

LARSEN HONORED FOR SERVICE TO MEAT SCIENCE 
Steve Larsen (’98 animal science, ’00 MS animal science, meat science), vice president of science and technology at the National Pork Board, received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Meat Science Association. Larsen previously worked as a food technologist at Tyson Foods, Inc. before joining the National Pork Board as a director of pork safety. He was recently promoted to Vice President of Science and Technology at National Pork Board.
 
IUTZI NAMED PRESIDENT OF THE LAND INSTITUTE
Fred Iutzi (’06 MS sustainable agriculture, agronomy) has been named president of The Land Institute, a nonprofit agriculture research organization based in Salina, Kansas, working to advance perennial grain crops and polyculture farming. He presently serves as manager of agriculture, energy and cooperative development programs for the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University. He will succeed Wes Jackson, who co-founded the institute 40 years ago. Iutzi will take the helm Oct. 1.
 
ALUMNI, FACULTY, STAFF HONORED FOR STUDENT SERVICE 
The Iowa State University Alumni Association established Faculty-Staff Inspiration Award as a way for former ISU students to recognize faculty or staff who had a significant influence in their lives as students. 2016 recipients included: William Edwards (’69 ag business, ’71 MS ag economics, ’79 PhD) and Bob Jolly, emeritus professors of economics; Larry Ebbers (’62 ag and life sciences education, ’68 MS), professor in the school of education; and Matthew Ellinwood, associate professor of animal science. POLITO RECEIVES THOMAS THIELEN AWARD
Tom Polito (’76 agronomy, ’82 MS, ’87 PhD), former director of CALS Student Services, received the Thomas B. Thielen Award, the highest honor given by the ISU Division of Student Affairs, on April 26. The award, named after Iowa State’s vice president of student affairs from 1977 to 1997, recognizes individuals who strongly support student success. A retirement reception for Polito was held May 3 (see photos). Howard Tyler, professor of animal science, succeeds Polito on June 1.
 
CALS ALUMNI GATHER FOR PREGAME TAILGATE TOUR RECEPTION
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumni and friends gathered for a “pregame reception” at Arnolds Park Amusement park near Okoboji, Iowa, prior to the Iowa State Athletics Cyclone Tailgate Tour on May 17. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey (’81 ag business) and CALS Associate Dean John Lawrence (’84 animal science, ’86 MS economics) offered updates on water quality research, programs and partnerships. Lauren Houska (’15 ag and life sciences education) has been hired as an account coordinator at Sandbox Group.

 

Lexie Cook (’15 horticulture) has joined the Hy-Vee floral design team in Dubuque.

 

Ellie Weiss (’13 ag studies), account executive with The Meyocks Group received the 2016 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award at the National Agri-Marketing Association’s student competition.

 

Scott Henry (’12 ag business, international ag), business development manager with LongView Farms in Nevada, was featured in an Iowa Farm Bureau story about utilizing AgriSync technology on his family’s farm operation.

 

2000s

Bradley Petersen (’07 ag business, ag systems technology) has joined the Kent Corporation commodity procurement team as a senior commodity manager.

 

Nathan Underwood (’07 ag studies), senior merchandiser at Flint Hills Resources was featured by Koch for his role in the company and commitment to agriculture.

 

Janessa Mechler (’05 animal science), a veterinarian in Spencer, was featured in the Alliance for Iowa State newsletter for her contributions to the community.

 

Michael Witt (’03 ag and life sciences education), is the new field agronomist for the Iowa State Extension and Outreach crops team. Witt will serve Audubon, Crawford, Guthrie, Harrison and Shelby counties.

 

1990s

Chad Hart (’99 PhD economics), professor of economics, has received an Exemplary Faculty Mentor Award from office of Iowa State’s senior vice president and provost.

 

Tong Wang (’98 PhD food science and human nutrition), professor of food science and human nutrition, has been named a fellow by the American Oil Chemists Society.

 

1980s

Sergio Lence (’88 MS economics, ’91 PhD), professor and Martin Cole Chair of International Agricultural Economics, has received an Exemplary Faculty Mentor Award from office of Iowa State’s senior vice president and provost.

 

Bill Northey (’81 ag business), Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, received the Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture Award from Gamma Sigma Delta, the Iowa Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture.

 

Gary Wright (’81 ag business) has joined Iowa State Extension and Outreach as a farm management specialist in northwest Iowa.

 

1970s

Vicky Hinsenbrock (’77 animal science), loan manager with Farm Service Agency in Winneshiek, Fayette and Allamakee counties, was honored by the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee with the 2016 Friend of Agriculture Award.

 

Tom Shipley (’75 ag and life sciences education), state senator from Nodaway, provided the keynote address at the Iowa Western Community College commencement ceremony.

 

Rich Degner (’72 ag and life sciences education, ’77 MS), retired CEO of the Iowa Pork Producers Association has been named a 2016 Pork Master by National Hog Farmer.

 

1960s

Tom Loynachan (’68 farm operation, ’72 MS agronomy), professor of agronomy, received the Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture Award from Gamma Sigma Delta, the Iowa Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture.

 

Don Greiman (’62 animal science) a retired farmer near Garner, was featured in a Latham Hi-Tech Seeds blog post about his commitment to the Iowa State Fair. Greiman's memoirs are shared in his new book, A Blue Ribbon Life, co-written with Iowa State theatre professor, Jane Cox.

 

1950s

Lauro Fred Cavazos (’54 PhD genetics), received an honorary doctorate degree from Texas Tech University. Cavazos was president of Texas Tech from 1980 to 1988.

 

In Memoriam

Harlan Ritchie (’57 animal science), 80, of East Lansing, Michigan, died April 27.

 

James Pearson (’56 farm operation), 82, of Des Moines, died April 3.

 

Warren Kester (’43 agronomy), 95, of Fort Dodge, died March 14.
