SPRING 2022 GRADUATING STUDENTS CELEBRATED

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences held its spring convocation May 13 in Hilton Coliseum. Javelis Marín Castro, animal ecology and pre-vet, was the convocation speaker. Alyssa Rosenbaum, culinary food science and horticulture, served as the CALS student marshal at the university undergraduate commencement ceremony May 14, in Hilton Coliseum. Six graduating seniors were presented awards by the CALS Student Council:

  • Belinda Hoffman (global resource systems, dietetics) – Outstanding Senior Award
  • Emily Saeugling (animal science) – Leadership Excellence Award
  • Jensina Davis (agronomy, seed science) – Academic Achievement Award
  • Javelis Marín Castro (animal ecology, pre-vet) – Distinguished Service Award
  • Cole Eden (agricultural business) – Outstanding Ambassador of Agriculture and Life Sciences Award
  • Nick Battles (global resource systems, agriculture and society) – Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion Award

FUTURE VETERINARIAN OVERCOMES LANGUAGE BARRIER TO FIND SUCCESS

Valeria Miranda Ortiz, animal science, spoke no English when she arrived at Iowa State. After graduating from high school in Puerto Rico, she moved to Ames to begin the Academic Program of Excellence, an immersive summer experience to help multicultural high-schoolers transition to Iowa State. She spent hours learning English to achieve her dream of becoming a veterinarian. More

FUN AND WINDING PATH TO BECOMING COMMUNITY COLLEGE TEACHER

Savanna Judson graduated with a master’s degree in agricultural education this spring. She has taken a bit of a winding pathway to becoming a community college instructor, but she has enjoyed the journey. Following graduation, Judson will be teaching a summer semester course at Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll, Iowa, campus. More

SENIOR REFLECTS ON ACADEMIC, PERSONAL GROWTH

Allee Koestner’s curiosity of the agricultural industry began in FFA. As an agronomy student at Iowa State, she assisted in research projects based on crop science and soil science and came to recognize how one influences the other. More specifically, Koestner dug deep to examine how plants interact with microbial communities. More

GRADUATE ASPIRES TO CONNECT ANIMAL AG, FOOD SECURITY, PUBLIC HEALTH IN FUTURE CAREER

Grace Jakes wasn’t an agriculturalist by chance – she became one by choice. Jakes didn’t grow up on a farm, but decided to major in dairy science and global resource systems at Iowa State. As a result, she discovered her strengths as a researcher and her affinity for improving the industry worldwide. More

NEW SORGHUM LINES MAY BE BIOFUEL OF THE FUTURE

New inbred lines of sorghum that are significantly more productive and cold-hardy than sorghum plants of the past have been developed by Maria Salas-Fernandez, agronomy. Recently released through Iowa State, the lines produce hybrids that deliver high biomass yields, are well adapted to northern growing conditions and require fewer inputs of pesticides and fertilizer. USING UV LIGHT TO PRODUCE SAFER, MINTY FRESH AIR

Jacek Koziel, ag and biosystems engineering, has teamed up with Kryton Engineered Metals, a metal spinning and fabricating company in Cedar Falls, and Iowa State’s Center for Industrial Research and Service, to develop a box unit that uses UV light to filter airborne dust, pathogens and odors from livestock facilities. RESEARCHERS SHARE SURPRISE BEAVER DAM OBSERVATIONS

A study that seeks to quantify beaver dam impacts on water quality, hydrology and stream morphology has reached the one-year mark. Although primary goals of the study focus on how dams influence sediment, nitrate and phosphorus levels in waterways, time in the field has generated observations on additional impacts. More

IOWA STATE DEDICATES NEW TURKEY TEACHING AND RESEARCH FACILITY

On May 9, CALS dedicated the new Stanley L. Balloun Turkey Teaching and Research Facility, the only facility of its kind focused on turkey production at a major university. The facility provides students a living classroom to experience hands-on learning in modern production practices and state-of-the-art equipment for research that addresses current challenges and helps advance Iowa’s turkey industry, one of the largest in the United States. Located south of the Iowa State campus on 520th Avenue, the facility also offers continuing education, outreach, peer-to-peer opportunities for professionals in the industry and observation areas where visitors, including schoolchildren, can see first-hand examples of turkey production systems and learn about turkey production. STUDENTS 'NERD OUT' AS THEY BUILD BIONIC HAND

Karri Haen Whitmer ('10 PhD genetics), genetics, development and cell biology, is one of nine CALS faculty who were selected for the new CALS Innovation and Entrepreneurship Faculty Fellows Program. The program aims to expand a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among college faculty. This past semester, 11 students involved in the biology and honors programs enrolled in Haen Whitmer’s experimental course. The students learned about bionics technologies, then used that newfound knowledge to create a bionic hand. More

NEW NAME FOR MAJOR APPEALS TO STUDENTS, FACULTY

The agriculture and society undergraduate major has been renamed agricultural and rural policy studies, effective fall semester 2022. “Agriculture is more than just farming,” said David Peters, professor of rural sociology. “It’s about food, energy and conservation. Rural is more than just small towns. It’s about the linkages between cities, urban consumers and the global economy. Students will learn about the policy dimensions of agriculture, and about strategies to promote rural vitality… In short, our major is the people and policy side of agriculture.” More

Save the Date! CALS BBQ Sept. 3, 2022

Plan to join the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for our CALS BBQ on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at the Iowa State Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. Similar to past years, the event will take place three hours prior to the Iowa State vs. Southeast Missouri State Redhawks football game. This annual event welcomes all CALS alumni and friends to enjoy fellowship and learn about new college initiatives. BBQ invitations will be sent electronically this summer as more details become available. More

ROUSE HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN ACADEMIA

Gene Rouse ('69 MS animal science, '71 PhD) was named the 2022 recipient of the Golden Alumni Award for Achievement in Academia from the University of Minnesota. After earning his bachelor's degree in animal science from the university, he furthered his education at Iowa State. He served as the State Extension Beef Cattle Specialist for Iowa State from 1976-1981, then as professor of animal science until 2004. More

Sonia Carrola ('19 food science) gets to create formulas for ice cream products in her role as a food product technologist at Wells Enterprises, the maker of Blue Bunny, Halo Top, Bomb Pop, Blue Ribbon Classics and more. She loves seeing products she develops being sold in stores. She said there is a lot of variety in her job, making each day different, and ice cream is a very fun (and tasty!) category to work in.
