CONGRATS TO THE HISTORIC CLASS OF 2020

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences welcomed its 283 newest alumni during virtual convocation and university commencement on Saturday, Nov. 28. Riley Wilgenbusch (agronomy and global resource systems) was the convocation speaker. Kendra Spier (dairy science and global resource systems) was the CALS student marshal at the university undergraduate commencement ceremony. Spier was accompanied by her faculty mentor, Leo Timms, animal science. CALS Student Council presented awards to the following graduates: Riley Wilgenbusch (agronomy, global resource systems) Outstanding Senior; Emmaline Putnam (global resource systems), Commitment to Diversity; Justin Swanton (animal science, ag and life sciences education), Leadership Excellence; Luke Sloterdyk (global resource systems, environmental science), Academic Achievement; Augusta Hamaker (biology), Distinguished Service; Heidi Fichter Mandt (ag and life sciences education, global resource systems), Outstanding Ambassador of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Mohamed Shogar (’20 genetics) came to the United States from Sudan in 2016, without knowing the language or understanding the culture. After four years of hard work, both academically and professionally, Shogar graduated from Iowa State and started his journey to medical school. More

Deann Winter (’20 animal science) blazed her own trails at Iowa State as an Army vet and young mother. The new grad served as a diesel mechanic in deployments in Germany and Italy before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. More

JOHNSON NAMED ARTZ CHAIR IN ANIMAL SCIENCE

The ISU Department of Animal Science has selected Anna Johnson as the first Artz Chair for Faculty Excellence in Animal Science. The Tyrone D. Artz, M.D. Chair for Faculty Excellence in Animal Science recognizes a faculty member who has shown distinction in undergraduate education in animal agriculture and has a prominent research program in an area that strengthens and supports animal agriculture in Iowa. SHAW EARNS KOLMER APPLIED RESEARCH AWARD

The ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has presented the Dean Lee R. Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research to Angela Shaw (’03 animal science, ’06 MS meat science, food science and technology), associate professor in food science and human nutrition and extension specialist. Shaw’s research is focused on food safety intervention practices from the farm through the grocery store environment. More

VINCENT NAMED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

Amy Vincent (’97 MS animal science, genetics, ’02 DVM, ’04 PhD immunobiology), research veterinary medical officer and lead scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service, National Animal Disease Center, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Her groundbreaking research led to improved vaccines and surveillance for swine influenza.

WINTERSTEEN HONORED FOR FOOD SYSTEMS LEADERSHIP

Wendy Wintersteen (’88 PhD entomology), president of Iowa State University, has been honored with the 2020 Food Systems Leadership Award from the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities. The award is the highest recognition from the organization for a leader in the food system and recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary impact on the food systems through leadership and service.

KARDEL RAISES PRESIDENTIAL TURKEY TO BE HOUSED AT IOWA STATE

Ron Kardel (’74 farm operation) and his wife, Susie, of Walcott, Iowa, raised this year’s official Thanksgiving Turkeys – Corn and Cob. In continuation of a 73-year holiday tradition, Corn, was pardoned and declared this year’s Presidential Turkey. Both turkeys will make their forever home at Iowa State. Ron serves as chairman of the National Turkey Federation. Ron and Susie are shown with the birds and Gretta Irwin (left), executive director of the Iowa Turkey Federation.

Ja’Markkus Evans ('14 industrial technology) is an environmental health and safety engineer with L3Harris Technologies - Space and Airborne Systems. He works directly with leadership to ensure compliance with local, state and federal government safety and environmental regulations. Evans identifies corrective actions using injury data to mitigate safety issues and coordinates safety training and policy for employees. More
