BIRT NAMED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

Diane Birt, a distinguished professor of food science and human nutrition, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine for her achievements in human nutrition research. Birt’s induction into the academy, considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, makes her the second ISU faculty member named to the National Academy of Medicine. Catherine Woteki, former dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was inducted in 1998. More

 

EXPERTS OFFER SCIENCE-BASED INFO ON WATER QUALITY

An International Plant Nutrition Institute video recently featured Iowa State University experts and their work in tile drainage research. The video details the long-term water quality research at Gilmore City, Iowa, and features Matt Helmers, agricultural and biosystems engineering, and John Sawyer, agronomy. Look for more details on the Gilmore City research site and other research and outreach efforts in water quality in the next STORIES magazine later this fall.  More

 

COLLABORATIONS MARK MONARCH CONSERVATION CONSORTIUM’S BEGINNING

The Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium was created in March by farmer, rancher and conservation organizations, state agencies, companies and Iowa State University to enhance monarch butterfly reproduction through collaborative and coordinated efforts. Collaborations with colleges, high schools and even a Boy Scout troop demonstrate the groundswell of support for the consortium. More

 

40 YEARS OF RESEARCH AT ISU NORTHEAST RESEARCH FARM

ISU’s Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Nashua, is celebrating 40 years of operation. Ken Pecinovsky (’88 agronomy, MS ’94 crop production and physiology), the facility’s superintendent for the last 20 years, oversees as many as 60 to 70 research plots each year. He and colleagues look at new ways to produce better corn and soybean crops, study soil fertility and management and monitor water quality. More

 

CALS STUDENT BRINGS HUNGERU EXHIBIT TO ISU CAMPUS

Marshall Dolch, senior in agriculture and life sciences education, brought the HungerU exhibit to Iowa State’s campus last week to help students learn about the serious, solvable challenges of world hunger. Dolch took a semester off last year to travel with HungerU, a mobile marketing exhibit that crosses the U.S. to raise awareness about the global hunger crisis. More

IOWA FARM AND RURAL LIFE POLL OFFERS INSIGHT TO FARMERS' USE OF TECH

“Farmers are increasing their use of information technology devices, and for those who use them, they tend to access information to help with farming decisions,” said J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr., sociologist with ISU Extension and Outreach. The 2014 Farm Poll asked farmers about their use of various information technology and communication devices including basic cell phones, smartphones, computers, tablets and type of access to the Internet. HORT STUDENTS SHOWCASE SKILLS AT BRUNNIER’S 40TH

Iowa State University Horticulture students, staff and alumni transformed the Brunnier Art Museum into a sea of flowers for the museum’s 40th Anniversary celebration. Eight students teamed up with alum Dan Brabec (’02 horticulture), owner of Coe’s Flower Shop in Ames, and Barb Clawson, horticulture program coordinator, to provide floral pieces for the September 19 event. GLENN NAMED PRESIDENT DUPONT CROP PROTECTION

DuPont has named Timothy P. Glenn (’88 animal science) as president of its Crop Protection business effective October 1, succeeding Rik Miller who elected to retire after 31 years of service to the company. Glenn will report to DuPont Executive Vice President James C. Borel (’78 ag business) . More

 

 

TOBIN INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL 4-H HALL OF FAME

James P. Tobin (’78 ag and life sciences education and studies) of St. Louis, Missouri, was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame on October 9 for his lifetime achievements and contributions to 4-H. Honored by National 4-H Council, Tobin was one of 16 people inducted during the ceremony at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. More

 

SZYMANSKI OF U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT VISITS ISU

Marcella Szymanski (’97 PhD forestry), deputy director for agricultural policy, U.S. Department of State, presented a seminar, “OMG, It’s a GMO: The Intersection of Policy, Science, Food Security and Trade,” on Oct. 14 at Iowa State University. Szymanski works on trade policy, food security and development issues related to agricultural biotechnology with a regional focus on South and Central America. View seminar

 

BING NAMED INDIANA’S OUTSTANDING BIOLOGY TEACHER

Lori Bing (’90 MS entomology), Zionsville Community High School science teacher, has been selected as the 2015 Outstanding Biology Teacher for Indiana. The Outstanding Biology Teacher is one of the most prestigious awards given by the National Association of Biology Teachers. Candidates are judged on their teaching ability and experience, cooperativeness in the school and community, inventiveness, initiative, and student-teacher relationships. More

 

FURNISH SHARES CAREER IN FOREST SERVICE OCT. 27

Jim Furnish (’68 forestry), a consulting forester in the Washington D.C. area, previously served with the USDA Forest Service for 34 years. He will be on Iowa State University campus Oct. 27 to discuss his recent memoir at 7 p.m. in Dolezal Auditorium room 127 Curtiss Hall.  He will speak on the evolution of Forest Service management and policy from an environmental perspective and read from his book “Toward a Natural Forest: The Forest Service in Transition.” More

 

FARMERS, ALUMNI SHARE ENTREPRENEURIAL LESSONS

The Iowa State University Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative hosted their fourth annual Farmer Entrepreneur Roundtable at the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agricultural Student Learning Center September 10. The event was sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. CALS ALUMNI RECEIVE IOWA ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS

A record number of Iowa farmers were recognized at the Iowa State Fair this summer with the Iowa Environmental Leader Award. The award honors efforts by Iowa farmers to protect Iowa’s land and water, and are issued jointly among Gov. Terry Brandad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Several CALS alumni received Iowa Environmental Leader Awards including Matt Bormann (’01 ag business) and Nancy Bohl  Bormann (’04 environmental science, ag and life sciences education), LuVerne, Iowa, pictured receiving their award. More

 

ANIMAL SCIENCE TEACHING FARMS CELEBRATE 50TH

More than 270 people celebrated the 50th anniversary of the ISU animal science teaching farms on Sept. 26. Animal science alumni, faculty and staff attended the celebration at the farms south of Ames. The event was held at the ISU Beef, Sheep and Swine Teaching Farms and included self-guided tours, lunch and presentations. More

Title: Southeast Iowa Field Coordinator, Trees Forever

Hometown: Muscatine, Iowa

Degree: '13 Forestry and Animal Ecology

Major Responsibilities:  I work with volunteers, communities and landowners to plant trees and native plants in a lot of different program areas including community forestry, buffer strips, pollinator habitat, trails, advocacy for our natural resources and planting along transportation corridors.

The Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Ambassadors are holding an informational program on Nov. 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville, Iowa. Alumni, prospective students and parents are invited to attend. Speakers include Ron Stover (’73 ag and life sciences education), Big River Resources; Aaron Cling (’13 ag studies), AgriGold; and Michael Fosdick (’11 agronomy), DuPont Pioneer. Karl Gesch (’15 MS soil science) has been hired as a watershed coordinator/resource management specialist for the Iowa Soybean Association.

 

Randi Koehler (’15 ag and life sciences education, agronomy), agricultural education instructor at Lawton-Bronson High School, was featured by the Sioux City Journal for helping launch the school’s first agriculture education program.

 

Grant Bargfrede (’14 public service and administration in agriculture) has accepted a new position with Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity in Kansas City as director of chapter advancement. 

 

Nolan Benzing (’14 animal ecology) is the new farm bill biologist for Pheasants Forever in Winner, South Dakota. 

 

Traci Tiernan (’13 ag and life sciences education communications option) is the new communication specialist for ISU Extension and Outreach Agriculture and Natural Resources.

 

Ryan Augustine’s (’12 ag studies) company, AccuGrain is a finalist for the American Farm Bureau Federation Rural Entrepreneurship Challenge. AccuGrain uses x-ray technology to inventory flowing grain in real time.

 

Kellie Gregorich (’12 ag and life sciences education) was selected as the Region 3 Marketing Ambassador for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

 

Adam Varenhorst ('11 MS entomology, '15 PhD) is the new entomology specialist for South Dakota State University Extension.

 

2000s

Joe Vanstrom (’08 industrial technology, ’12 MS) is a new lecturer in the department of ag and biosystems engineering.

 

James Koltes (’07 PhD genetics) has been named assistant professor of epigenetics at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences Department of Animal Science.

 

Cody McKinley ('07 ag business) has been hired as the new director of state and national relations for the National Pork Producers Council. McKinley will begin his new role on Nov. 2.

 

Abbie Johnson (’06 ag and life sciences education, ’09 MS) is the new county youth coordinator for ISU Extension and Outreach in Mitchell County.

 

Jacob Handsaker (’04 ag studies) is this month’s featured advisory committee member for the Iowa Farm Bureau Young Farmer Program. 

 

Kim Hawkins ('01 animal ecology) has been promoted to natural resources fisheries biologist at Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery.

 

Jason Ross (’00 animal science), Lloyd L. Anderson Professor in Physiology and associate professor of animal science, has been appointed as the director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center.

Craig Boelling (’96 animal science) has been named vice president of resource development for the National Pork Producers Council. 

 

1980s

Brad Harvey (‘87 farm operation), a farmer near Akron, Iowa, was presented the Outstanding Service to Agriculture Award by the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce.  

 

Ron Zelle’s (’83 ag and life sciences education, ’87 MS) FFA program at Nashua-Plainfield High School, received at $10,000 from the Monsanto Fund America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant to improve science and math programs.

 

1970s

Bob Petrzelka (’79 forestry), of Geode Forestry, spoke with graduate students in Natural Resource Ecology and Management in September on "Tending Trees in the Land of Corn and Beans.” Petrzelka is an ISU Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching delegate.
