CARRIQUIRY NAMED TO ACADEMY OF MEDICINE
Alicia Carriquiry, a Distinguished Professor of statistics, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. During her 26-year career, Carriquiry (’86 MS statistics, ’89 PhD statistics, animal science) has developed statistical methods to better measure food consumption. Her work also has focused on evaluation of Veterans Affairs mental health services. Carriquiry’s work is supported by the Agriculture Experiment Station. More
MEETING ON THEIR TURF
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach provides the latest information on food safety guidelines and laws, industry standards and training. Iowa State recently received $1.1 million from the Food and Drug Administration to help fruit and vegetable growers and processors comply with new federal food safety regulations. Angela Shaw ('03 animal science, '06 MS meat science, food science and technology), assistant professor in food science, above, will lead the team effort. DISCOVERING CLUES TO SOYBEAN RUST
Pathologists are piecing together clues about how a global pest, soybean rust fungus, hacks the immune systems of soybeans. Further study of how the protein interacts with the soybean immune response could lead to better protection against soybean rust fungus and similar pathogens. More
UNDERSTANDING BIODIVERSITY THROUGH COTTON
Jonathan Wendel studies how plants, specifically cotton, evolve and diversify. Wendel is a Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology — co-administered by the colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Liberal Arts and Sciences. He helped sequence the entire genome of diploid cotton in 2012 and recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation to sequence 600 more cotton genomes. More
CAREER DAY BY THE NUMBERS
CALS Career Day held Oct. 11 attracted 262 employers, 2,719 students and 105 students from 19 other schools, including Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech. Employers conducted 1,063 campus interviews during the three days following career day.
DUPONT EXEC OFFERS LEADERSHIP LECTURE
Executive Vice President of DuPont, Jim Collins, presented the 2016 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture “Growth Comes When You Least Expect It" on Oct. 5 at Iowa State University. Collins was recently named executive vice president for the DuPont agriculture segment: DuPont Pioneer and Crop Protection. View a video of the complete lecture. More
SKUNK RIVER NAVY NETS RECORD TRASH
The Skunk River Navy, consisting of over 100 Iowa State student, faculty and staff volunteers set an all-time record for the amount of trash removed during their 50th trash collection event Sept. 17. Associate professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology Jim Colbert, the army’s “commanding admiral,” says the group collected more than four tons of garbage from the Skunk River (8,260 pounds to be exact). That brings the group’s all-time trash removal total to 77.8 tons thanks to more than 2,270 volunteers. More

The Iowa State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the Iowa State Alumni Association presented awards at the annual Honors and Awards Ceremony on Oct. 28. CALS Awardees include: Cindie Luhman (’83 animal science, ’90 PhD nutritional physiology), Floyd Andre Award; Robert Walton, Sr. (’61 PhD animal science), Henry A. Wallace Award; Walter Hill, George Washington Carver Distinguished Service Award; and Nancy Bohl Bormann (’04 environmental science, ag and life sciences education), Outstanding Young Professional Award. BYRUM HONORED WITH GENIUS AWARD
Joe Byrum (’99 PhD agronomy, plant breeding), senior research and development and strategic marketing executive in Life Sciences-Global Product Development, Innovation and Delivery at Syngenta, and his team, received the Neustar and Association of National Advertisers Genius Award for analytics innovation.
DELUCA NAMED DEAN AT UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA
Tom DeLuca ('93 PhD soil science) has been selected to serve as dean of the College of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana. DeLuca currently serves as the director of the University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences and will begin his service as dean on Jan. 1, 2017. He also has worked as a faculty member at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and Bangor University in the United Kingdom. DeLuca was a senior scientist at The Wilderness Society and senior research scientist at the Institute for Subarctic Alpine Research in Sweden.
GREENS RECEIVE STATE CONSERVATION HONORS
Dale Green (’67 animal science) and his wife, Karen, owners of Spring Valley Farms near Castalia, received the Iowa Conservation Farmer of the Year Award. The award is co-sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. The Greens have implemented more than 30 land-stewardship practices on their operation. They were also honored by IDALS during the Iowa State Fair with an Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award.
SWANSONS HONORED DURING CYCLONE FAMILY WEEKEND
Stuart Swanson ('90 ag business), a farmer near Galt, and Adelai Swanson ('16 ag business), government affairs trainee with Dow AgroChemical, addressed the families of freshman CALS students during the college's Cyclone Family Weekend breakfast on October 15. The Swansons are shown with Ron Deiter, professor of economics, who advised them both as students, and Wendy Wintersteen ('88 PhD entomology), Endowed Dean of the college. The entire family of Ronald ('61 farm operations) and Florine Swanson ('64 home economics), Stuart's parents, was honored as Cyclone Family of the Year during the weekend festivities.

Several CALS alumni are among the 24 recent graduates of the Iowa Corn Leadership Enhancement and Development Class 7. The program focuses on understanding of agriculture, making decisions as a group and developing a leadership style.
