ROBISON SELECTED AS NEXT DEAN OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES
Daniel J. Robison from West Virginia University has been named the next endowed dean of Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and director of the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station. Robison, dean of the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, and director of the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Station, will begin his tenure by March 31, 2019. ACKER HONORED BY WORLD FOOD PRIZE FOR INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION
The World Food Prize presented the inaugural “Inspiring the Next Generation” award to Iowa State University Associate Dean David Acker. Presented during the Laureate Award Ceremony on Oct. 18 at the Iowa State Capitol, this award recognizes the tireless dedication Acker has shown in encouraging students, through the World Food Prize youth programs, to follow in the footsteps of Iowa hero Norman Borlaug. NEW TIPS FOR PREPARING BEST HABITAT FOR MONARCHS
The Iowa Monarch Conservation Strategy recently added best management practices to guide Iowans in helping increase monarch butterfly habitat. Establishing and maintaining monarch habitat is essential for Iowa to meet its monarch conservation goal of establishing 480,000 to 830,000 acres of habitat by 2038. The addition to the strategy includes details about choosing and preparing a site as well as planting and managing it. More
MS IN AGRONOMY DISTANCE PROGRAM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS, MOORE, CIHA HONORED
The Master of Science in Agronomy distance education program kicked off its 20th anniversary by tailgating at the Cyclone football game on Sept. 22. The program was pilot tested in early 1998, and now has an average of 165 active students. At the tailgate Ken Moore, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture and Life Sciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred Professor in Agronomy, was presented the Arden Campbell Award for dedicated service as program director for several years, and Allan Ciha, senior lecturer, received the Student Impact Award for his dedication to advising and service as a major professor. BIODEGRADABLE SOY WAX BENEFITS ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT
Researchers at Iowa State are exploring new uses for soybean oil, including as a coating for cardboard products that would be greener than widely used paraffin wax. The research could open new markets for soybeans at a time when grain prices remain stubbornly low and benefit the environment by reducing the roughly 3 billion pounds of paraffin-coated boxes that end up in landfills every year. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture on Oct. 2. Wyant’s presentation, “Unlocking Your Inner Entrepreneur: How one of the luckiest days of my life was when I got fired from a job I loved,” is available online. More
DANFOSS GIFT OF DYNAMOMETER ALLOWS STUDENTS, RESEARCH TO GROW
The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering held a groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 5 for a new testing facility that will house state-of-the-art equipment, help prepare students in ABE for the workforce and advance research that leads to new engineering technologies. Danfoss Power Solutions has committed more than $1.8 million to the facility. The gift will allow the university to purchase and install a $1.2 million off-road vehicle chassis dynamometer. More
IOWA ORGANIC CONFERENCE NOV. 18-19
The 18th annual Iowa Organic Conference, a joint effort between Iowa State and the University of Iowa Office of Sustainability, will be held on Nov. 18-19 in Iowa City. Producers and experts from across the country will share tips for transitioning into organic production and methods to enhance organic operations. More

The Iowa State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the Iowa State Alumni Association will honor several college alumni at the annual Honors and Awards Ceremony this Friday, Oct. 26. CALS awardees include (from left to right, top to bottom): Jim Christensen (’82 farm operation ), Floyd Andre Award; Max Rothschild, Henry A. Wallace Award; Dawn Mellion-Patin (’95 PhD agricultural and life sciences education),George Washington Carver Distinguished Service Award; and Jen Sorenson (’01 animal science, journalism and mass communication), Outstanding Young Professional Award. JACOBIS, JESKES NAMED IOWA STATE EMERGING PHILANTHROPISTS
Jay (’89 agricultural business) and Julie (’88 agricultural business) Jacobi and Doug (’89 agricultural journalism and public service and administration in ag) and Karen (’89 distributed studies, ’10 PhD sociology) Jeske were presented with the 2018 Order of the Knoll Emerging Philanthropist Awards on Friday, Oct. 12. This award recognizes individuals or couples who have provided philanthropic support and creative leadership to the Iowa State University Foundation and Iowa State University through the advancement of philanthropy. TUPPERS NAMED CYCLONE FAMILY OF THE YEAR
The Joanne (’84 horticulture) and Larry (‘83 civil engineering) Tupper family of Ionia, Iowa, has been named the Cyclone Family of the Year. The two met at Iowa State and each of their children have attended as well. The Tuppers offer this advice to parents of current Cyclones: “Learn to let go and allow your family member to find their own way, support them in their failures, celebrate with them in their triumphs and enjoy every moment of their adventure.” More
PATRICKS EARN HERITAGE FOUNDATION AWARD
George Patrick (’71 ag business) and his wife, Trish Patrick (’89 liberal studies), were honored by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation with the 2018 Lawrence and Eula Hagie Heritage Award. The award recognizes "Iowans who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to conservation and improvement of the natural environment." The Patricks are retired ISU Department of Agronomy research associates and have been active in prairie restoration and conservation efforts at a local and state level. More
