STORIES DEMONSTRATING THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE

The latest issue of STORIES, the college’s alumni magazine, features faculty, staff and students that have demonstrated the spirit of service – collective efforts to make a positive difference in the world. Stories in the magazine feature students who volunteer their time to serve others on campus and beyond, ISU Extension and Outreach staff who help entrepreneurs find success, and alumni who devote their time to improving the lives of minority populations.

BREAKING NEW GROUND WITH PERENNIAL COVER CROPS

A diverse team of scientists including D. Raj Raman, agricultural and biosystems engineering, and Kenneth Moore, agronomy, received a five-year, $10 million grant to study the potential environmental benefits afforded by perennial grasses between rows of cash crops. Developing new approaches to cover crops could break down barriers keeping farmers from more widely adopting the use of them. More

GRANT FUNDS STUDY ON DIVERSE CORN BELT PROJECT

J. Arbuckle, sociology and criminal justice, and Phil Gassman, Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, are part of a regional team awarded a five-year, $10 million grant to enhance Midwestern agriculture’s resiliency by moving away from the dominant corn-soybean rotation. NEW GENETIC LINES FOR ORGANIC CORN PRODUCTION

Thomas Lübberstedt, agronomy, and Kathleen Delate, horticulture, are among scientists leading an effort to improve efficiency and genetics in organic corn production, a fast-growing sector of the agricultural world since early 2020. They will apply genetic tools to the development of organic sweet corn and varieties of corn for specialty uses, such as popcorn and tortillas. More

CONSTRUCTION OF NEW FEED MILL TOWER COMPLETE

Construction crews worked 24 hours a day for four-and-a-half days to pour cement for the feed mill tower at the Kent Corporation Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex, located at the intersection of Highway 30 and State Avenue in Ames. The facility combines teaching, research, extension and international outreach conducted by the animal science and agricultural and biosystems engineering departments. The complex is expected to be complete by fall 2022. More

HORTICULTURE STATION PLANTS SMALL TREES WITH BIG POTENTIAL

Trees in the newly planted orchard at the Horticulture Research Station will soon be bursting with apples thanks to an innovative growing technique. The chosen apple varieties are already near their maximum height – eight feet compared to the 50-foot height of traditionally grown apple trees. Superintendent Nick Howell ('85 horticulture, '15 professional agriculture) said the new orchard will be used to demonstrate the best practices for this growing system to apple producers in Iowa. FUNDISU CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED FOR ISU-UGANDA PROGRAM

The campaign will target early childhood development in Uganda. The goal is to provide age-appropriate learning materials, improve nutrition through adequate meals throughout the day, increase the number of teachers’ aides/assistants, and continue improving infrastructure at schools in the district. ANNUAL IOWA ORGANIC CONFERENCE IS NOV. 28-29

The Iowa Organic Conference will be held Nov. 28-29 in Iowa City. Producers and experts will share tips for transitioning into organic production and methods to enhance organic operations. The conference, a joint effort between Iowa State and the University of Iowa, is the largest university-sponsored organic conference in the country. More

CORNELIUS PRESENTS DEAL LECTURE AT IOWA STATE

Chris Cornelius ('83 agricultural journalism), co-owner of Cornelius Seed located near Bellevue, Iowa, was the speaker for the 2021 William K. Deal Leadership Lecture, held Sept. 28 in Dolezal Auditorium in Curtiss Hall. She presented "Be the Glue: The Business of Being a Family in a Family Business." A native Iowan, Cornelius grew up on a diversified farm in Guttenberg, Iowa. Alongside her husband, Chuck, and their two sons, Will and James, she co-owns and manages her family’s independent, fifth generation seed business. Video

CALS ALUMNI INDUCTED INTO IOWA 4-H HALL OF FAME

During the 2021 Iowa State Fair, the Iowa 4-H Foundation inducted 14 CALS alumni into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame, which honors individuals who have exemplified outstanding service and dedication to the 4-H youth program in their county. CALS alumni inductees are from Decatur, Dubuque, Fremont, Harrison, Henry, Humboldt, Jackson, Jefferson, Lucas, Montgomery, Plymouth and Story counties. More

Elizabeth Christenson ('18 agronomy, animal science) and her husband started their own regenerative farm on the farm where he grew up. Their primary focus is to restore the soil health to increase the nutrient density of the food produced, ultimately improving human health. She said she enjoys the challenge of implementing different production practices to improve the soil.
