DECIPHERING CONTENTS OF PIGS' BLOOD CELLS

Scientists at Iowa State and USDA Agricultural Research Service are analyzing the complex content of pigs’ blood cells to improve disease resilience in swine. Christopher Tuggle, animal science, is the lead investigator in the $650,000 grant from USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Jack Dekkers, animal science, is a co-investigator. More

LAB AIMS TO REPAIR SEVERED NERVES, FOSTER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Undergraduate students at Iowa State are part of Donald Sakaguchi’s research team testing different structures that could be used to help patients recover from traumatic nerve injuries. VIRTUAL ANATOMY TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

Students in animal science have access to new 3D virtual technology in the domestic animal anatomy and physiology lab. “We are the first animal science program in the nation, possibly the world, to incorporate this state-of-the-art, cutting-edge virtual anatomy and physiology dissection table technology in the classroom by Anatomage,” said instructor Karl Kerns ('14 animal science). LAND STEWARDSHIP LEADERSHIP ACADEMY HOLDS INAUGURAL GRADUATION

Twenty Iowa natural resource professionals, including several CALS alumni, were part of the first Land Stewardship Leadership Academy. The nine-month program helped early and mid-career professionals build stronger relationships with farmers and landowners while advancing conservation practices. More

2023 GARDEN CALENDAR TACKLES GARDEN MYTHS

The 2023 garden calendar from ISU Extension and Outreach is now available for purchase. “Garden Lore,” prepared by Cindy Haynes and Aaron Steil ('05 horticulture, biology) in the Department of Horticulture, aims to distinguish gardening fact from gardening fiction. It includes important gardening tips as well as information regarding extension resources. More

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences awardees

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Iowa State University Alumni Association will present awards to several CALS alumni and friends at the 91st annual Honors & Awards Ceremony on Nov. 4. More

CALS awardees are:

  • Floyd Andre Award - Robert E. Rust (friend of Iowa State)
  • George Washington Carver Distinguished Service Award - Christopher E. Nelson (friend of Iowa State)
  • Henry A. Wallace Award - Bill Northey ('81 ag business)
  • Outstanding Young Professional Award - Amanda (Taylor) De Jong ('02 ag business)
  • ISU Alumni Association Outstanding Young Alumni Award - Martin Gross (’11 biology, ’13 MS food science and technology, ’15 ag and biosystems engineering & food science and technology)
  • ISU Alumni Association Alumni Medal - Mick Guttau ('69 farm operations) and his wife, Judy

ALUMNA'S INTEREST IN POULTRY TOOK FLIGHT AT IOWA STATE

Yalitza Curiel ('22 animal science) became interested in poultry as a young girl growing up in Mexico. Her experience working at Iowa State's Robert T. Hamilton Poultry Teaching and Research Facility as a student provided her direct experience with many aspects of egg production. She gained further knowledge through involvement in a poultry interest group on campus. More

SHEA PRESENTS DEAL LECTURE AT IOWA STATE

Ernie Shea, president of Solutions from the Land, a not-for-profit organization based in Lutherville, Maryland, presented the 2022 William K. Deal Lecture Sept. 28 in Curtiss Hall's Dolezal Auditorium. In his presentation, "21st Century Agricultural Renaissance: Solutions from the Land," he challenged producers to reimagine their businesses and suggest pathways and tactics to transition from linear food and agricultural systems to sustainable, profitable and resilient circular systems that lay the foundation for a world of abundance on many scales. Emily Franciskato ('20 genetics) aims to take away the "why us?" or "what caused this?" questions families have as they're trying to grow their family. As a reproductive genetic counselor and assistant in obstetrics and gynecology in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Franciskato enjoys working with families, providers and advocacy organizations in her role.
