WINTERSTEEN APPOINTED TO NEW TERM AS DEAN

Dean Wendy Wintersteen ('88 PhD entomology) has been appointed to a new five-year term. During her previous term she managed record enrollment growth each year while also growing sponsored funding and philanthropic support, and increasing student diversity. “Leading the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has been an exceptional experience,” Wintersteen said. “I am excited to continue working with faculty, students and staff to serve Iowa and the world.” More

 

CALS CONTINUES GROWTH, SETS ENROLLMENT RECORD

For the fourth consecutive year, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has set a new enrollment record. Over the past decade, CALS has seen an 88.4 percent increase in undergraduate students and a 12.4 percent increase in graduate students. For the first time in history, women make up the majority of CALS undergraduate students — 50.7 percent female and 49.3 percent male. Other numbers of note: 

  • 5,375 CALS undergraduate and graduate students (up 170)
  • 4,612 CALS undergraduates (an increase of 137)
  • 36,001 ISU’s fall 2015 enrollment (the largest in history)
  • 100,223 Iowa State alumni residing in Iowa (more than graduates from any other institution)
  • 70 percent of new CALS grads begin their careers in Iowa 
  • Top five CALS majors by enrollment: animal science, agricultural business, agriculture studies, animal ecology and agronomy

BIOLOGICAL, AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING #2 IN U.S.

Iowa State University and its Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering rank second in biological and agricultural engineering among national universities and also second among public universities in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 “America’s Best Colleges.” More

 

INTELLIGENT MACHINES, THE NEXT STEP IN AG AUTOMATION

Lie Tang (right), associate professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, has devoted his career to designing cutting-edge equipment that automates agricultural work. His research has contributed to innovations such as tractors that drive themselves and robots that hunt down weeds. Tang is the latest entry in a series of articles telling the story of ISU faculty whose work is changing the world for the better. More

 

BAYER SUPPORTS IOWA SOYBEAN RESEARCH CENTER

Bayer CropScience has become an industry partner of the Iowa Soybean Research Center at Iowa State University. “This kind of partnership will allow us to help Iowa farmers grow the highest quality soybeans to meet the demands of a growing global market,” said Greg Tylka, director of the center and professor of plant pathology and microbiology. ROASTERIE FOUNDER TO PRESENT LEADERSHIP LECTURE


Danny O’Neill, ISU alum, owner and founder of The Roasterie Coffee, Inc., will present the 2015 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture on Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Leonard and Evelyn Dolezal Auditorium, 127 Curtiss Hall. O’Neill will present, “How Baling Hay Prepared Me to Become the Coffee Bean Baron.” The event is free and open to the public. O’Neill's specialty coffee roasting company services espresso bars and coffee houses, fine restaurants, high-end grocers, offices and includes three Roasterie Cafes. More

 

CALS FACULTY, STAFF HONORED WITH TOP AWARDS

Several College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty and staff were honored Monday with Iowa State University's most distinguished awards during a ceremony at the Memorial Union. Winners from CALS were: Stephen Howell, professor of genetics, development and cell biology; Gregory Courtney, professor of entomology; Christopher Tuggle, professor of animal science; Garland Dahlke ('94 MS animal science, '97 PhD), assistant scientist, animal science and Iowa Beef Center; Joel Coats ('70 genetics), Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of entomology and toxicology; Paul Lasley, professor and former chair of sociology and anthropology; Jo Anne Powell-Coffman, professor and chair of genetics, development and cell biology; Lance Baumgard, professor of animal science; Jason Ross ('00 animal science), associate professor of animal science; Kathleen Delate, professor of horticulture and agronomy and Ajay Nair, assistant professor of horticulture. Also awarded this week was the college's Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research to professors Mahdi AlKaisi, agronomy, and Jim Dickson, food science.

CAREY HONORED FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE

James Carey (’73 fisheries and wildlife biology, ’75 MS entomology), distinguished professor in the department of entomology at the University of California-Davis, received the 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching from the Entomological Society of America. The award is presented annually to the member of the society deemed to be the most outstanding teacher of the year. 

 

STRICKLAND FEATURED IN NATIONAL ECOLOGY VIDEO

Jeramie Strickland (MS ’08 ecology and evolutionary biology) is featured in a recent Ecological Society Of America video. Strickland, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and his sand prairie field site along the Mississippi River are included in the video. The video highlights the discipline and some of its practitioners as the association celebrates its 100th anniversary. More

 

FREDERICKS NEW PRESIDENT IOWA SOYBEAN ASSOCIATION

Wayne Fredericks (’73 animal science), a farmer from Osage, is the new president of the Iowa Soybean Association board of directors. Fredericks was also elected to represent Iowa on the board for the American Soybean Association. More

 

BAAS OVERCOMES ILLNESS, RETURNS TO TEACHING 

Tom Baas ('72 animal science, MS '89, PhD '90), a member of the animal science faculty since 1994, is back to teaching and advising this fall after being diagnosed with leukemia. Baas is in remission and told the Iowa State Daily that he feels closer to normal every day. In an Aug. 25 article, Baas tells how optimism and support helped him overcome his illness and return to teaching. Former students Matt Romoser ('15 animal science) and Amanda Outhouse ('15 animal science) offered their thoughts in the article on Baas' contributions to students. More

 

FREEMAN TO CONNECT ISU RESEARCH, CEDAR RAPIDS

Iowa State University has hired a food scientist to lead a new collaboration with Cedar Rapids and its agricultural, food and bioprocessing companies. David Freeman (’08 food science) has industry experience with DuPont Industrial Biosciences in Cedar Rapids and Grain Processing Corp. in Muscatine. He began his duties in August.​ Freeman will be based in Cedar Rapids, working to identify opportunities for collaboration with Iowa State scientists, engineers, extension and economic development specialists. More

 

SKARTVEDTS’ “SAMPSON” NAMED SUPER BULL AT STATE FAIR

Jim  (’01 animal science) and Danelle Skartvedt (’05 public service and administration in ag) of Atlantic, are owners of “Sampson,” a Red Angus bull who won the 2015 “Super Bull” title at the Iowa State Fair. Their bull, “Sampson,” weighed in at 2,893 pounds. More

 

CALS BARBECUE WELCOMES 450 ALUMNI, FRIENDS

The CALS Barbecue for alumni, friends, faculty and staff was held Sept. 5 in the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. More than 450 people attended the pre-football game event and enjoyed a Hickory Park meal. Dean Wendy Wintersteen and CALS student Lexi Marek shared remarks. Marek is a junior in public service and administration in agriculture and co-chair of the 2015 ISU Bacon Expo. Several CALS student clubs offered hands-on, educational activities for youth in attendance. See photos on Facebook.

William Headlee (’04 forestry, environmental science, ’12 PhD forestry) is the new assistant professor of forestry for the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s School of Forestry and Natural Resources.

 

Jennifer McGuire Bousselot (’01 agronomy, MS ’03 sustainable agriculture) has a new position with the Colorado Native Plant Society as the Membership and Marketing Coordinator and is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Colorado State University.

 

In Memoriam: Joshua Olson (’00 horticulture), 36, of Granger, died September 2.

 

Tim Felderman (’00 ag education) is the new principal at West Delaware County Community High School in  Manchester, Iowa. Felderman was previously with Howard-Winneshiek community school district.  

 

1990s

Kellie Carolan (’99 animal science) has been named executive director of ISU Extension and Outreach in Tama County.

 

Trent Preszler (’98 interdisciplinary studies, ’01 MS botany), CEO of Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue, New York, is featured in the upcoming issue of OUT magazine.

 

1980s

Tom Wahl (’84 fisheries and wildlife biology), owner of Red Fern Farm in Wapello, Iowa, was featured on Radio Iowa for producing chestnuts and other niche crops on his operation.

 

Margaret Ellibee (’83 ag and life sciences education), president of Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock, Arkansas, was recently featured for her contributions and future plans for the institution in ArkansasOnline.

 

Michael Gray (’82 MS entomology, ’86 PhD), professor and assistant dean at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was selected as a 2015 Honorary Member of The Entomological Society of America (ESA). Honorary membership acknowledges those who have served the organization for at least 20 years.

 

Steve Kerns (’81 animal science), a farmer near Clearfield, is a finalist for the National Pork Board’s America’s Pig Farmer of the Year competition. Kerns’ operation began in 1966 as part of a 4-H project, and has  grown into a full-scale seedstock operation.

 

Bill Northey (’81 ag business) was recently featured in an Iowa Farmer Today for his dual role as an Iowa farmer and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture.

 

1970s

Mark Grigsby (’75 MS animal science, ’81 PhD), chair of the math and science department at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma has been named grand marshal of the college’s homecoming parade.

 

Larry Lundblad (’75 horticulture), president of Central Lakes Community College in Brainerd, Minnesota, has announced his retirement at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year.

 

1960s

Jim Furnish (’68 forestry) will be on campus Oct. 22 to publicize his recently published memoir Toward A Natural Forest: The Forest Service in Transition. Event details will be posted at http://www.nrem.iastate.edu as they become available. 

 

Al Bohling (’67 landscape architecture, MS ‘69) retired from Shive-Hattery - Architecture Engineering Consulting Firm, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During his 19 years at Shive-Hattery, he served as a Landscape Architect and former Community Development Team Lead. 

 

In Memoriam: Rodney Brannen ('61 ag business), 76, of Amelia Island, Florida, died August 18.
