GEOFFREY DAHL THIRD DEAN FINALIST TO VISIT CAMPUS, OPEN FORUM THURSDAY

Geoffrey Dahl from the University of Florida is the third finalist for the next endowed Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Director of the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station at Iowa State. He will visit campus Sept. 26-28. Dahl, the Harriet Weeks Professor of Animal Science, will meet with students, faculty, staff and external stakeholders during his visit. He also will hold an open forum Thursday, Sept. 27, from 3-4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room. His curriculum vitae and interview itinerary are available on the Provost’s Office search page. Video recordings of open forums with all three finalists will be available online Oct. 1.

 

CALCULATING THE IMPACT OF TRADE DISRUPTIONS
The Center for Agricultural and Rural Development released a report on “The Impact of the 2018 Trade Disruptions on the Iowa Economy.” The results of the study offer calculations of overall losses in Iowa’s gross state product ($1 to $2 billion), soybean industry ($545 million), corn industry ($333 million), pork/hog industry ($776 million), ethanol prices, labor income and tax revenue. More

 

PROTECTING SOIL HEALTH IN NO-TILL ORGANICS
Kathleen Delate, horticulture, is part of a multistate grant to assess current technologies that could be used in no-till organic systems and determine which practices will help farmers protect soil health in their fields. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (project lead), Iowa State and the Rodale Institute are working on the project, funded through the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. More

 

BREAKING GROUND TO MODERNIZE POULTRY TEACHING AND RESEARCH

Ground was broken Friday, Aug. 31 as the first step in replacing Iowa State University’s aging poultry science facilities, made possible by private funding from Iowa agricultural donors. The new complex will be called the Robert T. Hamilton Poultry Teaching and Research Farm. More

 

AWARDING $3.5 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has awarded nearly $3.5 million in scholarships to students for the 2018-19 academic year. Since 2005, scholarship totals for incoming freshmen and current students have tripled, thanks to gifts from donors. More

 

CALS STUDENT ATHLETE NAMED FARM STRONG

Zach Timm, junior in agronomy, is one of 16 student athletes named to the 2018-2019 Farm Strong Squad, a partnership between the Iowa Farm Bureau and the Iowa State Athletics Department. Timm is a member of men's track and field from Monticello, Iowa. The program recognizes the values of hard work, commitment and integrity embraced by farmers and student-athletes. More

 

WYANT TO PRESENT LEADERSHIP LECTURE OCT. 2

Sara Wyant, president and founder of Agri-Pulse Communications, Inc., the nation’s largest communications firm focused on agricultural and rural policy issues, will present the 2018 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture Oct. 2 at Iowa State. She will present, “Unlocking Your Inner Entrepreneur: How one of the luckiest days of my life was when I got fired from a job I loved,” at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. The event is free and open to the public. The late William K. Deal, a CALS alum, established the lecture series to help prepare future leaders and innovators in agriculture. More

 

BACON EXPO OCT. 6 BENEFITS FOOD AT FIRST, SPECIAL OLYMPICS


The sixth annual Bacon Expo will be held Oct. 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. Organized by CALS students, Bacon Expo is a family-focused event where participants can sample creative bacon treats and enjoy live entertainment and educational displays about the pork industry. This year’s Bacon Expo will donate leftover bacon to Food at First. The expo team also selected Special Olympics of Iowa as a recipient of a portion of the proceeds raised. CYCLONE STAMPEDE INVITES ALUMNI, AMES COMMUNITY OCT. 19-20

The 56th Annual Cyclone Stampede Rodeo will be held on Oct. 19-20 at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. The event is open to the public with tickets available online and at the door: $15 for adults, $10 for students and youth 6-17. Children under 5 years old are free. More

Emily Toner (’09 agronomy) has been awarded a Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship to research and write about peat bogs and soil carbon in Ireland. She will be writing stories for popular media as well as blogging about her experience on Irish Bogs: Science, Politics and Culture. More

 

BORUFF EARNS ILLINOIS AG LEADERSHIP AWARD

Chet Boruff (’76 farm operations) received the Torch of Leadership award from the Alumni Association of the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation on Aug. 25. The honor recognizes those who, “have built a legacy of leadership through exceptional personal commitment and uncommon excellence in service to Illinois agriculture.” Boruff is CEO of the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies. He actively farms in the Quad City area where he lives with his wife and fellow Iowa State alum, Joy. View a video tribute to Boruff.

 

CALS ALUMNI HONORED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP

More than 20 CALS alumni were presented an Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award at the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 15. The award is a joint effort by the Governor, Lt. Governor, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa Department of Natural Resources to recognize the exemplary voluntary efforts of Iowa’s farmers as environmental leaders committed to healthy soils and improved water quality. FREVERT ADDRESSES 450 FARM CELEBRATION

Iowa State’s student-managed farm celebrated its 75th anniversary with a banquet on Sept. 21. Known as the ISU Ag 450 Farm, it is operated by students enrolled in the Department of Agricultural Education and Studies course “Agricultural Farm Management and Operations 450.” The farm is the only completely student-managed farm at a U.S. land-grant university. More than 150 alumni, students and current and former farm staff participated in the event including one of the program’s early graduates Don Buck (’49 farm operation). Jim Frevert (’60 farm operation), above, offered remarks and reflections about his experience in the course and what inspired him to create the James and Clare Frevert Ag 450 Fellowship to support the instructor-in-charge position. Erika Lundy (’12 animal science, ’15 MS) has been hired as a beef specialist for ISU Extension and Outreach in southwest Iowa.

 

Ashlee Sorensen (’12 public service and administration in ag) has accepted a position as digital account lead at Spinutech.

 

Holly Shutt (’10 animal ecology) has been hired by Pheasants Forever as a farm bill biologist.

Amanda Snodgrass (’09 horticulture, environmental studies, ’12 MS horticulture) has accepted a position as a botanist for the U.S. Forest Service at Klamath National Forest in California. She was featured for her former role as a horticulturalist for the U.S. Park Service on TheHoe.org's blog.

 

Chris Miller (’07 ag business) has joined First National Bank’s Waverly office as vice president, business banker.

 

Ashley McFarland (’07 MS environmental science) has accepted a position as the business and industry liaison extension educator for the University of Minnesota Sea Grant Program.

 

Amy Christofferson Henry ('03 animal science, '16 MS ag and life sciences education), agricultural marketing specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, celebrates 15 years with the organization in September.

 

Regan Slonecker (’02 animal ecology), zookeeper at Peoria Zoo in Peoria, Illinois was featured in the Peoria Journal Star.

 

Amy Brandau (’00 ag business, ’08 MBA), academic adviser in the ISU Department of Economics, received the ISU Award for Academic Advising Impact during the ISU Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony.

 

Corrinne Grover (’00 genetics, ’07 PhD), associate scientist in the ISU Department of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology, received the ISU Professional and Scientific Award during the ISU Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony.

Randy Miller (’91 ag studies), farmer near Lacona, was elected to the executive committee of the Iowa Soybean Association’s board of directors.

 

Tim Bardole (’90 ag studies), farmer near Rippey, was elected president-elect of the Iowa Soybean Association’s board of directors.

 

Daniel Thomson (’90 animal science, ’00 DVM), Jones Professor of Production Medicine and Epidemiology at Kansas State University, received the Zoetis Distinguished Service Award at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners annual conference.

 

1980s

Steve Bierschenk (’87 dairy science) is joining Paine Schwartz Partners, LLC as a managing director on the investment team.

 

Mark Schleisman (’86 ag business), farmer near Lake City, was featured in the Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman.

 

Kendall Lamkey (’85 PhD agronomy), professor and chair of the ISU Department of Agronomy, received the ISU Award for Departmental Leadership during the ISU Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony.

 

Clyde Tiffany (’83 agronomy, ag mechanization), field agronomist for Corteva Agriscience in Minnesota, has celebrated 35 years working with the Pioneer brand. In 2017 he was awarded the Long Look Award from the company.

 

1970s

Wayne Fredericks (’73 animal science), farmer near Osage, was re-elected to serve as a director of the American Soybean Association board.

 

Randy Hiemstra (’72 farm operation), farmer near Kingsley, received the Plymouth County Farm Bureau Service to Ag Award.

 

Donald Beermann (’71 animal science), professor and chair of the ISU Department of Animal Science), received the ISU Award for Early Achievement in Departmental Leadership during the ISU Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony.

 

1960s

D. Kent Nelson (’68 PhD animal science) received the Colorado State University Alumni Association’s 2017 50-Year Club Outstanding Recognition for Career Achievement Award.
