BUILDING ‘GENOME TO PHENOME’ RESEARCH COMMUNITY FOR CROPS, LIVESTOCK

A new federal grant will support an Iowa State-led effort to spur development of a “genome to phenome” infrastructure for scientific collaboration across crops and livestock. The three-year, $960,000 project will lay the groundwork for a larger federal Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative sponsored by the USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture. More

AGRICULTURAL AND BIOSYSTEMS ENGINEERING RANKED NO. 2 IN U.S.

The agricultural and biosystems engineering undergraduate program is ranked No. 2 in the U.S. News and World Report’s newly-released 2021 “Best Colleges” ranking for the second year in a row. The department’s 43 faculty encompass a global view of the entire food production system – the wise management of natural resources in the production, processing, storage, handling and use of food, fiber and other biological products. STUDYING THE RESILIENCY OF THE AGRICULTURE SUPPLY CHAIN

A new Rapid Response Program grant will allow Iowa State researchers to study how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the U.S. food supply chain with the goal of increasing resiliency against future disruptions. Keri Jacobs, economics, will lead the program, funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, with John Crespi, Chad Hart, Dermot Hayes and Lee Schulz, economics, and Bobby Martens, supply chain management. The Water Rocks! educational program for youth is offering outdoor programming at schools, in response to the social distancing requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic. More

CALS CAREER FAIR GOES VIRTUAL OCT. 13-14

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will host a virtual two-day Career Fair on Oct. 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year students will have the opportunity to interact with companies and employers online through a virtual event hosted by CareerEco. Recruiters will post on CareerEco’s job board descriptions of each available position. The company representatives will also list the days and times they are available to chat with students online during the two-day event. More

PREPARING FRESHMEN TO EXCEL VIA APEX

Exploring resources, networks, the Iowa State community and the agricultural industry is what students in the Academic Program for EXcellence (APEX) do the summer before their first year on campus. Elizabeth Martinez-Podolsky, director of multicultural student success in CALS, says the purpose of APEX is to help incoming multicultural students transition to Iowa State. This year the program was shortened from eight to five weeks and presented as a virtual class due to COVID-19. More

NEW HANDBOOK OFFERS CROP PRODUCTION INSIGHTS

ISU Extension and Outreach has released the Field Crop Production Handbook: An Introduction to Farming Practices. The 144-page handbook provides a general overview of the essential aspects of producing field crops in Iowa. It focuses on the basics of crop establishment, but also on care and harvest, as well as the impacts on soil, water and wildlife. It’s written for those new to agriculture and is well-suited for high school and college agriculture programs wanting to offer a primer in crop production. More

The combination of drought, derecho and hot weather has Iowa crops maturing earlier than usual and with a host of grain quality concerns. Charles Hurburgh, agricultural and biosystems engineering and grain quality specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, says communication is key in helping producers and grain buyers determine the best course of action. Following the derecho many farmers have been left with unharvestable fields that may require additional management to prepare the soil for next season. COVER CROP OPTIONS FOR DAMAGED CROPS

Use of cover crops after a crop is damaged by a weather event can provide short term protection of the soil while enhancing the long-term benefits of increased water infiltration, improved nutrient cycling and soil organism diversity, says Mark Licht, assistant professor and extension cropping systems specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. Licht reviews options for this fall. More

MATTISON HONORED BY NATIONAL DAIRY SHRINE

Jay Mattison ('81 dairy science, '83 MS animal science) CEO of the National Dairy Herd Information Association, was named this year's Guest of Honor by the National Dairy Shrine. The honor, the Dairy Shrine's highest recognition, is given to a contemporary dairy leader. He joins other prominent recipients with ties to Iowa State including: Henry H. Kildee (1949), Jay Lush (1969), James Hilton (1972) and Fred Foreman (1984) among others. More

LAMKEY RECEIVES PLANT BREEDING IMPACT AWARD

Kendall Lamkey (’85 PhD plant breeding), professor and chair of the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University, received the 2020 Public Sector Plant Breeding Impact Award from the National Association of Plant Breeders. Lamkey's research focuses on corn breeding with an emphasis on the quantitative genetics of selection response, inbreeding depression and heterosis. More

HUFF-LONERGAN WINS TEACHING AWARD

Elisabeth Huff-Lonergan (’91 MS meat science, ’95 PhD), professor of animal science at Iowa State University, was presented the 2020 Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Meat Science Association for the innovative teaching methods she uses to help students learn and prepare for their careers. Huff-Lonergan has been at Iowa State for more than 20 years. More

RACHUT HONORED AMONG TOP YOUNG VEGETABLE PRODUCERS

Steve Rachut (’04 ag business), farmer near Osage, Iowa, was honored as one of the 2020 Fruit and Vegetable 40 Under 40 awardees by Vegetable Growers News. Rachut also serves as owner of Steve’s Sweet Corn and co-operator of Kittleson Brothers, a potato and onion packing facility near St. Ansgar, Iowa. More

 

Young Alum of the Month

Rachel Pierce (’15 global resource systems, environmental studies) is a university admissions counselor. She works with prospective students, including first-year students, transfers, non-traditional or international students, and helps guide them through their college search process. She says she enjoys helping students find a program and path that allows them to work towards their goals. More
