CALS GROWS FIRST YEAR ENROLLMENT FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR |
This fall, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences saw an increase in the number of incoming undergraduate students for the second year in a row. Enrollment for fall 2022 is 4,310 students – 3,769 undergraduates and 541 graduate students. CALS saw continued positive trends of maintaining strong graduation numbers while also increasing student recruitment. Increases in both recruitment and overall enrollment across a diverse set of majors reflects trends at the university level. More
- CALS increased the number of new undergraduates by 3.1% compared to last fall.
- CALS has increased the number of newly recruited undergraduates by 8.5% since 2020.
- CALS has continued the tradition of excellence in student retention, with 88.1% of first-year students from last fall returning.
- More than 30% of CALS undergraduate students are from states other than Iowa, reflecting a university effort to expand recruitment markets. University-wide, non-residents make up more than 35% of the student population.

RESEARCHERS FIND ENDANGERED BUMBLE BEES IN IOWA |
Researchers at Iowa State, led by Amy Toth, ecology, evolution and organismal biology, are part of a multistate effort to map out where the federally endangered rusty patched bumble bee lives, identify what habitat it prefers and collect clues about the population’s genetic diversity and overall health. The findings, along with data about the threatened American bumble bee, could help wildlife managers and land stewards reverse the bees' decline and support other pollinators more broadly. More |

INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE BEE & WASP SQUAD |
Three CALS students spent the summer learning how to study pollinators and carry out experiments as part of the Bee & Wasp Squad. The squad was initiated in summer 2021 by Amy Toth, ecology, evolution and organismal biology. Funding for this summer's program came from Toth’s involvement in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Faculty Fellows Program, sponsored by the CALS Dean’s Office of Academic Innovation and Start Something College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. CALS STUDENTS SPEND SUMMER AS BORLAUG-RUAN INTERNS |
This year, three CALS students took part in the Borlaug-Ruan International Interns summer program, offered through the World Food Prize Foundation. The program places students in organizations around the world to work with eminent researchers and policymakers to analyze agricultural, nutritional, health, and environmental problems from a global perspective. INSIGHT INTO MEDICAL FIELD OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES |
Laura Millage, junior in microbiology and genetics, spent eight weeks in Botswana as part of the Council on International Educational Exchange program. With hopes of attending medical school, Millage said taking public health classes and gaining clinical experience has given her a greater passion and drive for her future in the medical field. More |

GRANT TO FUND RESEARCH ON TURNING PRAIRIE GRASS INTO RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS |
Lisa Schulte Moore, natural resource ecology and management, is working to make year-round covered ground a conventional practice. A new grant of up to $80 million from the USDA will fund a project meant to spur more farmers to plant cover crops and perennial prairie grass, through both direct payments and a demonstration of how harvested winter-hearty crops and grass can be processed into renewable natural gas. SURVEYS SHOW HISTORIC INCREASES IN FARMLAND VALUES AND CASH RENTS |
The annual land value survey and cash rent surveys from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service confirm what many in Iowa’s agriculture industry already expected: land values and cash rents are up significantly. According to an article in the September edition of the Ag Decision Maker newsletter, Iowa cropland values rose 19.7% on average over the past year, from $7,810 per acre to $9,350 per acre. Pastureland is up 9.3%, now averaging $3,300 per acre. More |
